The Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University annually, starting from 2004, compiles the rating of the best universities and universities in the world. The initial goal of this rating was to clarify the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, in particular from the point of view of academic and research activities.
The rating is made on the basis of the following indicators: the number of graduates-laureates of the Nobel or Fields Prize;number of employees-laureates of the Nobel or Fields Prize;the number of frequently cited researchers in 21 categories;the number of articles published in the journals Nature or Science;various citation indexes for the natural and human sciences;size of the university.
Of the Russian universities in the top-100 ranking is only MSU .Its best indicators were 66th in 2005 and 2006.In 2014, MSU took only 84th place. The best university in Asia is Tokyo University , which took the 21st place in 2014.The universities of the United States and Great Britain dominate in the ranking of 2014, ranking 19 in the top twenty( also in the top 20 in the 19th place Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich ).
