Burning out with saltpeter

This method is suitable if you need to remove several stumps from one area at once. With the help of nitrate (sodium or potassium nitrate), you can not only remove the stump, but also burn out its roots.

Sequencing:

  1. Drill a few internal holes in the wood using thick drills. It is best to carry out such work in July-August or September.
  2. Pour saltpeter into the holes and pour in water.
  3. Close the holes with foil or stoppers.

To make it easier to pour saltpeter into the holes, use a funnel. Try to fill them to the brim, so the liquid will be absorbed faster and penetrate into the root system of the tree.

The process of removing the stump with the help of saltpeter is long - in the wrapped form, the stump should stand until next summer. During this time, its root system will completely dry out. After a year, light a fire around the stump and wait until the skeleton is completely destroyed. Then remove the stump and dig in the ground.

The advantages of the method:

  • You do not need to make great physical efforts.
  • The stump can be removed entirely, along with the roots.
  • It is very simple to implement this method of destroying a stump.

Flaws:

  • The soil will be completely saturated with saltpeter. Despite the fact that for some plants this substance can become a good fertilizer, it is impossible to plant fruit and tuber crops near the place of removal of the stump.
  • Chemicals must be purchased and properly stored until used.
  • The removal process is very long - one year takes from preparation to removal.

On average, one small stump will require about 2 kg of saltpeter. The more you use, the faster the wood will burn out. To quickly destroy the stump and its roots, the method is recommended to be applied in the middle of summer, when it is completely dry.

Grubbing the stump

You can remove the stump using an excavator or tractor. But most often, a milling cutter is used to remove stumps at a summer cottage, since attracting large agricultural equipment is extremely inconvenient and possibly not in all cases.

Principle of operation:

  1. Excavate the ground around the stump half a meter deep. Use a standard small shovel. Throw the soil to the side so that it does not fall back.
  2. Dig a small hole at a distance of one meter from the stump, and make a groove between it and the tree.
  3. Begin to flush out the soil with a water jet from a hose. It is better that the pressure is strong, then you can quickly get to the root system of the tree and pull out the stump.

When washing out the stump, there will be a lot of dirt around, so put on a work suit in advance, and if there are flowers or crops nearby, cover the beds with foil.

Another method of uprooting is by digging the stump with a winch. Tie a metal rope around the stump and start cutting. It will take an effort to completely remove all the roots, but the result will meet all expectations.

The third option for uprooting is mechanical extraction of the stump, suitable if you do not have working tools and special devices. This method is time consuming, but effective. Use a saw and an ax to chop off the stump piece by piece until you reach the roots. Try to peel off the bark and leave it in the middle - when you peel the stump, it can be pulled out of the ground.

Pluses of uprooting:

  • minimum financial costs, subject to the availability of instruments;
  • quick removal of stumps - two or three stumps can be uprooted in a day;
  • you can be sure of a good result, since you pull out all the roots from the ground with your own hands.

Minuses:

  • uprooting is a time-consuming process that requires strength and energy;
  • in some cases, it is not possible to excavate the area near the stump due to the presence of tiles or crops;
  • most often, to completely remove the stump, it is necessary to involve an assistant in the work.

If the tree stump in your area is old and dry, break it in two. In this case, you can remove the stump in 2-3 approaches, but try not to press hard on the base so that the stump does not fall apart.

Urea impregnation

This method of uprooting, as well as processing, is not fast - to remove the stump, you will have to process it with urea granules and wait a year. During this time, the wood will become soft, and it will be easy to get it out of the ground.

Unlike saltpeter, urea is safe for plants that are planted nearby, so you can safely use it. Use this method of treating the stump only if you have the opportunity to set fire to the stump in the future. If there are buildings nearby, choose a different method or try lifting the tree stump by hand using special tools.

To treat wood with urea, make the same holes as for other stump killing methods. The holes should not be too small - the optimal size is 1 cm in diameter. When doing them, hold the drill at an angle of 40 degrees - this will make it easier to fill in the urea, and it will be better distributed inside the tree.PHOTO: plants-1.ru

It remains now only to close all the holes with a plug.

Safety rules should be observed when working with any substances, be it salt, saltpeter or urea - put on gloves and use a funnel to distribute the product evenly in the holes made in stump.

Salting the stump

For brining the stump, use table salt, which you use when preparing food - it affects plants and soil, as well as wood. Please note that this method is only suitable for a freshly cut tree stump.

Punch a few large holes in the hemp and fill them with salt, and then cover with plastic. Add water to the holes throughout the year. It is especially important to do this after rain. The salt will "eat away" the wood; all that remains is to pull out the stump with the roots.

Keep in mind that this method of destroying the stump is only suitable if you do not plan to grow something on the ground next to this stump. Within 3-5 years, this land will be unsuitable for planting, but if you did not plan to do gardening, then you can be sure that no roots and weeds will germinate here.

Finally

Uprooting a tree stump is not an easy task. To prevent the tree from sprouting, it is not enough just to cut off the top or fill the base with concrete, it is necessary to pull its roots out of the ground. For many years, while it grows in the ground, it takes root very deeply and it can be very problematic to get them. Choose one of our suggested options and keep in mind that it can take a year to destroy the stump.

What method of uprooting the tree stump did you choose? Have you tried getting rid of the roots before and what was the result?
