Professionals have long said that there are no better masters in the construction of good frame frames than the Finns. Very often Russians want to achieve similar results and build a real strong house, as they say, for centuries. This summer we managed to interview one of the craftsmen who worked in the Finnish team on the construction of the cottage. He told how to paint the metal once and for all, so as not to repaint every year.
Metal preparation
First of all, remember - in any case, you must first remove rust. Even a new sheet of metal or a beam may contain initial signs of corrosion (after all, no one knows if the rules for transportation and storage have been followed).
Do not use advertised corrosion inhibitors. Better arm yourself with a good old hard metal brush or a special grinder attachment. It is important to carry out all manipulations before assembling the metal structure. You can use a wire circle for a grinder (angle grinder), in this case the work will be done quickly, and the effect will be good.
After surface treatment, it is important to remove all metal dust, often it remains after surface treatment with a wire wheel, then we use a degreaser or a viscose cloth.
In a short time, you will get a clean surface, on which there are no traces of old paint. Then you can prime the metal with a special compound, for example, "Tikkuriloy".
The next step is staining
Remember that painting must be done outdoors and the ambient temperature must be over + 20 ° С, otherwise the layers of paint will dry much longer, and the painting will be done poor quality.
More often than not, we are accustomed to the fact that the paint needs to be applied in two layers. These are the recommendations given by the paint manufacturer. However, it is best to apply at least three coats of paint with the obligatory maintenance of the interval between applications, usually at least 30 minutes with a thin layer, and if applied with a brush, then at least 1 hour.
In this case, it is better to apply the paint in a thin layer. In this case, the paint will dry much longer, and perhaps the bottom layer will not dry out at all, which speeds up the process of peeling.
It is better to additionally treat the places of fasteners and joints with an anti-corrosion agent. In this case, you need to dry it more thoroughly. Usually it is about 7 days. So you will avoid mechanical damage to the paint layer during installation. With the early installation of the profiled sheet, you can notice rust stains after a while.
According to the manufacturer, this paint protects the metal for up to 10 years. However, remember, no paint in itself gives a long-term result and an increase in exploitation! It is not the paint itself that is much more important, but the observance of all stages during the preparation for staining and the staining itself.
Good luck with your renovation and finishing work!
