And sometimes you need to enhance the zoning effect. In these cases, a sill is formed between the two rooms in the doorway. And this is not always a physical detail, but it may well be a decorative element.

For example, if this is a room, then it should have clear boundaries indicating its shape. And the doorway does not allow this principle to be realized: throughout the room, the walls mark its boundaries, and in the doorway one space somehow vaguely turns into another.

The concept of classical perception of space assumes the presence of visible boundaries. From her point of view, with the obligatory delineation of the space in the doors, disorder is obtained. It needs to be eliminated at least with a sill drawn on the floor - to mark the boundaries of two spaces. In this case, the contour of the floor must correspond to the contour of the ceiling. There was an opinion that the nut is beautiful! - the interior becomes more sophisticated.

The painted sill should be used to mark the front door. It also looks good when highlighting a niche. And if the opening is made in a thick wall, then the decorative sill will well mark the boundaries of neighboring rooms.

Over time, the physically realized threshold lost its practical meaning, it began to be designated by another floor covering material or simply by color. Approximately in this way the opinion arose that the nut is a trend of aristocracy. The presence of exquisite decorative and architectural details, used only "for beauty" and not bearing any functional load, is perceived as a sign of aristocracy.

When sills are not needed

The traditional sill as a building part that performs certain functions in the interior of a home has practically disappeared. But it has been preserved in its decorative form as a tribute to the architectural classicism.

Classical architecture prescribes the correct shape for the premises. When the door is closed, the floor covering of only one room is visible, and when the door is open, one form flows into another - and this is a violation of the rules of classicism. This is especially noticeable with thick walls. Hence, it is necessary to designate the nut as a border element.

Decorative sills are distinguished either by the flooring material or by color. But there are times when an architect (interior designer) deliberately refuses to use sills. If the walls between two rooms are thin, then the absence of a threshold makes them visually even thinner - sometimes it is beneficial for a designer to apply this technique.

If the designer wants to preserve the visual unity of the two rooms, then in this case the sill is also not needed. Its absence creates the effect of space continuity, which is very advantageous in the case of a sequential arrangement of several rooms.

Thus, transitional and docking sills in the house are not always exclusively a tribute to fashion. In most cases, they perform a building function that is mandatory in specific conditions. This is often an objective necessity. Of course, the sills are beautiful and bring sophistication and subtlety to the interior, but they also have a utilitarian meaning.
