When planning the next trip for fishing, it is necessary to take care of sufficient quantity of quality bait in advance. Usually it is harvested in advance, so experienced fishermen know how to store bloodworms at home, so that it remains alive for a long time. The size of the future catch largely depends on the quality of the bait.

Ways of storing bloodworms

The larvae of the mosquito-longtail are one of the most live live bait, and in winter - almost the only one. Usually this nozzle is stored ahead of time, counting on several trips. Therefore, the bloodworm acquired or produced independently must be able to keep alive for several weeks.

To keep bloodworms at home for a long time, it is necessary to consider some peculiarities:

  1. Larvae perish from their own secretions.
  2. They die from contact with dead individuals.
  3. Bloodworm does not tolerate prolonged exposure to air, as well as exposure to sunlight.

Inventive fishermen have come up with many different ways of storing this bait.

  • Excellent storage of mosquito larvae in a nylon stocking suspended in the toilet bowl. There is always fresh, cold water, which, when draining, cleans out the allocation of bloodworms. It remains to remove dead "worms" every 2-3 days.
  • It is very effective to store this bait in a container( preferably flat) with water placed in the refrigerator. The bloodworm should be a thin layer on the bottom. Once a day, water should be changed. It should be the same temperature. This is very important, since the heat stroke for bloodworms is deadly.
  • You can store this live attachment by wrapping it in a damp cotton or woolen cloth and placing it in a cool place. Wipe the napkin daily in hot water, and then rinse with cold. The larvae are placed on a wet napkin and wrapped.
  • Regular newspapers are often used instead of cloth. For these purposes, take three sheets - two dry and one wet. First put a dry sheet, on it - wet, on top of a thin layer( no more than 0.5 cm) bloodworm, top - dry leaf. Sheet can be rolled up with a roll or envelope and placed in a cool place. Paper must be changed daily, while removing dead larvae.
  • It is convenient to store bloodworms in a flat plastic, foam or wooden box( motel). At the bottom it is necessary to lay a piece of foam rubber of small thickness, cut to the size of the box. Completely suitable plate, cut off from the sponge for washing dishes. Foam should be slightly moistened and spread out the bloodworm. Once a week, foam should be washed and moistened. The motel must be placed on the lower shelf of the refrigerator. In such conditions it is possible to save bloodworms at home without any unnecessary troubles for a month, and, without filling with water, the bait becomes more firm and elastic.
  • You can freeze the larvae. They should be distributed in small portions, since several times they can not be frozen and thawed. Frozen bloodworm is usually used for supplementation in bait. Although it can also be used as a bait on a hook, but only immediately after thawing.

Original folk storage methods

  • A fairly well known method is storage in potatoes or cucumber. Tuber should be cut in half and remove the middle, leaving walls about a centimeter thick. Bloodworms must be placed in the carved cavities, connect the halves and secure with a rubber ring. Keep it in a cool place. Murphy should be washed daily.
  • Greatly stored bloodworm in a hot tea. Spread the used tea leaves on a damp gauze napkin, sprinkle the larvae from above, wrap and place in a cool place. But extracting bloodworms from this mass is quite difficult.
  • Some anglers suggest storing bait between fresh cabbage leaves. To do this, it is necessary to raise two or three top sheets and, between them, directly into the head, lay the bloodworm, which is then placed in a cellar or other cool place. How to sort out the larvae and how long they are stored is unknown, but the way is expensive, as the cabbage used will have to be thrown out.

Sorting the bloodworm

If the larvae are small in stock, then you can remove the dead ones manually, it will not take long. It's more difficult if there are a lot of bloodworms. Sort it every 1-2 days, otherwise the bait will deteriorate very quickly.

To separate dead larvae use a grid. You can take a large sieve with a cell about 2 mm. Cat tracks are very suitable for this purpose. In the pallet, you should pour water, so that it covers the net a little, then the whole stock of larvae is poured onto the net. During the time when the moth or other storage place is put in order, all living larvae will crawl through the net and fall to the bottom of the pallet, and the dead will remain on the grid.

If this procedure is carried out daily and the motel is placed in a refrigerator where the temperature is close to zero degrees, then this bait can be stored at home for several months.

Save live bloodworm at home is troublesome enough. But, when going on fishing( especially in winter), you do not have to run frantically around the shops to find a good bait.
