Water saturated with heavy metals is by no means the best option for a healthy lifestyle. But unfortunately, it is water with a high content of iron that most often flows from water pipes, and even in wells, wells, it often occurs. Cleaning water from iron is not an easy task. Moreover, for different cases, its own method is chosen, because there is no universal solution. Consider these methods, their pros and cons.

How to determine the presence of iron in water?

In drinking water, iron should not contain more than 0.3 mg / l. But often this indicator is exceeded many times, and it can be found in the following ways:

  • If the concentration is exceeded, you can determine this by the rusty stains that remain on the plumbing and clean linen. In this case, water can remain transparent.
  • If the norm is exceeded three times, the water becomes turbid, yellow-brown. Of course, there is a change in taste.

Important! Metallic taste with a large excess of iron is felt even in coffee or tea. The dishes inside can be covered with a brown coating.

Why remove excess iron?

Clear water from iron, you need, primarily for your own health. Rusty water leads to the appearance of allergies, there are diseases of the kidneys and liver, the skin becomes dry and irritated.

In addition, the technology suffers. Rust settles on the pipes, which then appears on the mechanisms of the washing machine or dishwasher, which eventually leads to its breakage.

What is iron in water?

There are various forms of iron that can be contained in water. Consider the most important of them:

  • Divalent iron dissolves in water. Even if it is in an increased concentration, the liquid will remain colorless and transparent. If you pour it into a glass and let it stand a little, the bottom will be covered with brown sediment.
  • Trivalent iron is not able to dissolve in water, so it becomes yellowish in color. If the liquid is put to rest, the bottom of the container will be covered with a brown precipitate.
  • In the presence of organic compounds of iron in the water, its color is yellow, but settling does not precipitate.
  • Water with "bacterial iron" on the surface has a specific iridescent film. Sediment, which in appearance looks like jelly, is deposited in the water supply system.

Important! If one of the signs of exceeding the concentration of iron is found, you should purchase filters to purify water from iron.

How to clean water?

A single method that would be suitable for any situation, has not yet been invented. Consider all modern methods of water purification from iron and evaluate them.

Ion exchange

For a long time already with the help of this method water is made softer. For this, natural ion exchangers( ion exchange resins) were used. Today, synthetic ion-exchange resins are more used, which have high absorption capacities. With the help of ion exchange, it is possible to remove manganese and organic iron.

Important! This method is best used for hard water, since the removal of iron occurs together with the salts of stiffness.

Catalytic oxidation and filtration

In order for iron to be oxidized, a special filtering "backfill" is used, consisting of manganese dioxide. As a result, after oxidation, iron precipitation occurs.

Important! The disadvantage of this method is its impotence in the case of bivalent iron and inefficiency at concentrations above 10 mg / l.

Oxidation, deposition and filtration of

This method has been known for a long time. Oxidation uses oxygen, chlorine, aeration:

  • Oxygenation requires a large reservoir to occur.
  • Chlorination became more widespread. Thus, iron is not only rapidly oxidized, but microorganisms are also destroyed.
  • The biggest prospect is for ozone with its significant oxidation capacity. But such a process is very expensive.

Important! The drawback of this method is inefficiency with respect to manganese, which almost always accompanies iron. In addition, without the addition of coagulant, the process will be very long.

Membrane method

With its help, microorganisms are removed, desalination is carried out and iron is removed. This method is quite expensive, in addition, filters for water purification from iron often need to be changed.

Distillation

Purification of water from iron using this method is quite reliable. For this, a distiller is used in which the liquid is heated, it turns into steam. All foreign substances that were in it are precipitated. Then the steam is cooled and condensation produces a distillate.

Important! Such a liquid has no smell and taste, therefore it is not popular among the population. Unfortunately, this method is very energy-intensive and low-efficient.

De-ironing of water by yourself

Filter for water from iron is not always effective, as its cartridges are constantly clogged. But you can also collect the aeration system yourself. We offer you one of the most effective ways:

  1. A large storage tank is installed in the attic. Ideally, if it will be with a taken out bottom, in the form of a barrel. The preferred material is food plastic. It will not react to corrosion.
  2. The first pipe is fed from the well. It is designed to supply liquid. The pipe extends along the entire length of the tank, at its end is attached a sprayer. Water flowing in thin jets comes into contact with air, bivalent iron oxidizes faster to trivalent iron.
  3. Second pipe - for tap. It is attached from the back of the tank, about 20 cm from the bottom. So do in order to avoid getting sediment in clean water. The output is equipped with a coarse filter.
  4. The tank is connected to a not very powerful compressor to accelerate the aeration process.
  5. A crane is installed in the bottom of the tank, due to which the sediment will be removed.

Important! Such a system works very simply: water is sprayed into the tank and remains in it for a day. During this time, oxidation of iron occurs and precipitation of it. Clean water enters the system.

Clean water is an important issue for health and well-being. Do not forget about it!
