Why do you need a tuner for a satellite dish
Modern TV tuners have a significant supply of additional features. Like: recording and playback of programs by time, the ability to access movies in applications, and so on. Modern models of TV tuners support not only the transmission of a satellite signal, but also surfing the Internet.
Features of the devices
Despite the apparent complexity of the tuner settings, even a beginner can deal with it. That is why we recommend that you carefully study our recommendations in order to simplify and reduce the time of equipment setup.
Appearance, connector support and functionality
First of all, you need to unpack the tuner and check the availability of a suitable connector for your equipment. Usually these are standard inputs and outputs that will fit any modern TV. The TV tuner must come with instructions, as well as a remote control with which the basic settings and playback parameters will be set.
The main task is to follow the instructions. Settings and options may vary depending on the equipment model and TV brand. When buying a TV tuner, pay attention to the device model and the ability to pair with your model.
Characteristics of hardware components and software
A modern satellite TV tuner is a small computer with a certain set of characteristics. In most models, it consists of a processor of a certain frequency, has a certain amount of RAM and a flash drive. Some models have the ability to receive both digital and analog signals. In addition, there are usually outputs for a USB drive or mouse. Many modern satellite TV tuners can support application formats: YouTube, RSS feeds, Yandex-weather, Web-TV, Web-server, DLNA DMR client with the ability to use Internet browsers to work in the Internet. In addition, in some models, you can install an additional hard drive.
Digital signal support
Satellite receivers are divided into analog and digital. The former allow you to view channels broadcast in analog quality, while the latter allow you to play them in digital form. Before purchasing a digital receiver, make sure it is compatible with the DVB-S2 digital broadcasting standard to access more channels and content. This is important when your TV does not have T2 support, and a satellite decoder with joint digital reception becomes a good solution.
Connection rules
When buying a receiver, you need to find out what range of TV programs will be available thanks to it. Also important is the coding standard with which this prefix works.
The most common satellite TV receivers are:
- receiver FTA (Free to Air - free), allowing you to receive only unencrypted channels;
- a receiver model with a built-in conditional access module that allows you to watch encrypted channels only in strictly defined encryption systems;
- CI (Common Interface) receiver for connecting an external module for decoding specific systems;
- a tuner designed for a specific satellite platform (removal of the card causes its immediate blocking);
- receiver with a built-in hard disk for recording programs.
What to check before connecting
Before connecting the satellite tuner (receiver) to a 220 V socket, you must make all the necessary cable connections to the satellite tuner (receiver). Check the presence of the necessary connectors and connect the blocks to the equipment. The satellite is connected to the receiver.
Most often, a satellite dish is tuned separately using a special tester. After installing the satellite for better signal reception, you can connect.
Connection is carried out in the following sequence:
- connecting a satellite dish to a satellite tuner (receiver);
- connecting a satellite tuner (receiver) to a TV;
- connection of peripheral devices.
How to install the device
The tuner must be installed on a flat hard surface with the possibility of ventilation of the equipment. It is necessary to provide technical ventilation of the device and access to the connected cables.
How to connect a tuner
The first step is to connect the receiver to the satellite dish. Any tuner has a special connector for connecting satellite - LNB IN.
At the ends of the cable from the satellite antenna, connectors are wound (type - F).
Connect the cable from the satellite dish to the satellite tuner (receiver) by screwing the nut F of the antenna cable connector onto the -LNB IN connector on the satellite tuner (receiver). Next, the tuner is connected to the TV. To connect a satellite tuner to a TV, on the back of any satellite tuner there is a set of connectors for connecting to a TV - tulips, scart, antenna output.
Initial setup
Find "Settings" in the menu. When switching to it, satellite parameters appear on the screen: name, polarization, signal level and quality. In different models of set-top boxes, these parameters may be called differently.
When you switch to the "Satellite" item, a list of embedded satellites appears. You need to click on the one you want to configure.
Switch to the disegc tab. In this tab, you need to find the number that corresponds to the previously selected satellite. Thus, the satellite is "bound" to the switch port.
After that, press the Exit button on the remote control and save the settings by pressing the OK button.
Time zone, language and menu
An approximate view of the menu is reduced to a list of items: “Settings”, “Antenna”, “Search for channels”. You need to independently find in the configuration options such as LNB, DISEqC, "0/12V", "Tone Flash", "Positioner". Be sure to check the following points.
Is there an exchange of signal with the correct satellite?
Find out if the satellite head settings are well defined:
- for C-Band (LNB, frequency 5150);
- for a circular head - circular LNB 10750;
- for linear - universal 9750/10600.
As a rule, such information is in the notes of the instruction manual of the satellite head. After that, find in the menu and set DISEqC for the desired satellite. You'd better remember or write down which outputs correspond to which antenna.
For satellite terminals common on the Russian market, this is at least support for English and Russian.
Audio channel and video mode
Most receivers provide image formation on TV screens with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and 16:9. Often there is a function to adjust the transparency of the OSD when it is simultaneously displayed with the program being viewed.
Typically, most models have two video modes: RGB or CVBS. As a rule, RGB is selected if connected via a SCART cable.
Audio channel - TV SCART or AUDIO L/R. This is where the mono/stereo mode is defined.
Picture and Screen Format
Image format - usually by default, in addition: envelope, cropped, combined. Usually 16Ă—9 format is used.
It is also necessary to select the parameters in the "TV standard" tab - PAL B / G, PAL D / K, PAL I, SECAM D / K). The required standard can be determined in the documentation on the TV.
Antenna system
Usually, the parameters of this part of the general setup menu are set by default by the supplier of the satellite TV equipment.
Signal level and decoding quality
Here you need to check the satellite coverage map in your area. Maps of satellite service areas can be found in directories. To view the map on the Internet, you need to find the desired satellite on www.lyngsat.com, then find the channel of interest on the satellite and select the link in the Beam column opposite it. On the map, find the place where your city is located, and use the isolines to determine the EIIM for this place.
Activation of television and radio channels
It must be remembered that some tuners only support free channels. For the rest, you will have to purchase a special digital access code. Check with the supplier in advance which type of receiver you are purchasing.
Check out the list of tuner variations depending on the functional features:
- Free-to-Air. The most budget type of satellite tuner. They are connected together with old-style antennas that receive a signal from TV channels that are distributed free of charge. They differ in who makes this device, and also differ in how many channels they can receive.
- Tuners with card readers. These devices have a special port for inserting a channel payment card.
- Tuners with HDD. Due to the fact that such devices can record what is on TV, and then view it at any time by inserting a hard disk into any device that will be able to read it.
- HDTV receivers. These are expensive receivers that are tuned to receive satellite television in high definition.
Additional functionality of the console
The remote control allows you to make point settings for the TV tuner. You can encode the operation of the satellite at a specific time. The user can also set the time intervals during which service messages, tips, information about the programs being viewed will be displayed on the screen.
In some receivers, you can change the color palette of on-screen graphics. In other devices, it is possible to change the background screensaver of the setup menu.
In addition, the remote can help implement the parental control function. To activate the remote control, you need to enter a special code.
The remote controls that come with the receivers are of two types: standard and universal. The universal remote allows you to control additional devices (TV, VCR, DVD player).
In addition, using the remote control, you can configure the display of additional information, such as date, time, weather.
