Balcony or loggia - a good addition to the apartment, which can be used with maximum benefit. The only problem is that builders rarely think about finishing and insulation of this object, and this becomes a headache for apartment owners. There are many finishing options, and one of the most popular is finishing the balcony with clapboard. It is quite possible to do it yourself, and then it will be great to save money. Let's look at the algorithm, calculations and features of such work.

How to choose the type of lining: features of choice
The specifics of the choice of lining for finishing the balcony is by no means in the design. There are many important factors to consider here. Keep in mind that a balcony is a room with possible sudden changes in temperature. It gets very hot in the sun in summer, and in winter, if there is no additional heating, the temperature will be below zero. In addition, such differences lead to unstable humidity, and this also has a great effect on any finish.
Euro or euro?
Such a prefix to the word "lining" is not a tribute to fashion. This is an indicator of the quality of the product. European standards refer to the production of finishing materials more strictly, they take into account surface treatment technologies and the radiality of workpieces.
To determine if your finishing material belongs to this category, pay attention to the presence compensation grooves on the reverse side of the lamella - it allows the plate not to deform during drops temperature and humidity.
What you need to know about lining types
Eurostandard or GOST - the lining also has a grade. The finished material after processing and drying is sorted and sized. Requirements for varietal differences may vary from enterprise to enterprise, so it would not hurt to clarify these features before buying. But there are some common features:
- Top grade or extra is a hand-selected material for loggia cladding with an ideal surface and regular geometric shapes, the assembly of which will not make it difficult even for a beginner in this matter.
- First class or class A - this is a good quality of processing, comfortable fit, no cracks and regulated presence of no more than one knot per 1.5 m2 surfaces.
- Second class or B This is a budget combination of quality and cost. Flaws will be present, but they are fixable by finishing, a little putty and painting. The number of knots is no more than 4 for the same area. There may be small cracks formed after drying.
- Third class or C are the leftovers from the complete sorting. There may be cracks, and resin pockets, slight rot, traces of insects. Such a lining is only suitable for finishing technical rooms. For a balcony, this is not the best choice.
What wood should be chosen for the balcony
The lining is made from different types of wood. The choice in this regard depends largely on the budget that you are willing to spend for these purposes. The most inexpensive option would be coniferous lamellas. They are easy to process, have special properties to release useful essential oils, but are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations. With differences, the lining can release resin, crack, and this is highly undesirable.
A good choice is ash or oak slats. They look very dignified, do not rot even in high humidity and have an attractive pattern. The price also "bites", but pays for itself with the durability of the finish.
Aspen, linden and alder are the best combination of quality and cost. These rocks are not afraid of changes in temperature and humidity, but require treatment with protective compounds to preserve color. Given their affordable price, this is the best choice for a sheathed balcony.
When choosing a lining, the question generally arises - is it worth choosing a natural material? After all, there are PVC substitutes that are much easier to install, and they often look just as good. But one can argue here: wood is a natural material that under no circumstances will emit toxins into the air, even if there is a radical heat outside. In addition, the "live" lining is pleasant to the touch, and walking barefoot on it is a pleasure.
Of course, there are also disadvantages in a living tree: this is a reaction to changes in the atmosphere, and the danger of the appearance of beetle pests, and susceptibility to rot. But if you get down to business wisely and process the lining with special compounds, all these troubles will not threaten you.
Alternative - plastic lining
Why not consider plastic lining as an alternative to ordinary wood? This finishing material is based on extruded PVC. Now even medical instruments are made from it, so you don’t have to worry about the safety of products. Of course, provided that you purchase products from trusted manufacturers.
Plastic lining is glossy or matte, differs in seam or seamless connection.
Appearance PVC lining can also be different. Manufacturers offer material with a relief surface that imitates wood, or smooth, like a polished stone. There are also a lot of color options: these are plain panels, panels with a pattern, and lamellas with an imitation of the pattern of natural materials.
Calculations of material consumption for cladding a balcony with clapboard
It is not difficult to calculate the consumption of lining for a balcony. It is no different from an ordinary room or other room. To simplify the task, divide the room into conditional planes and calculate their area separately, taking into account the presence of windows or doors.
If you have, for example, a wall with a large glazed space, divide it into rectangles and calculate the area of each of them: the space under the horse, on the side of it and on top. For calculations, it is enough just to add the results obtained - and you will have the desired quadrature.
To simplify, you can use online calculators - they can be found on many resources.
The number of lamellas per square meter will be prompted by the sellers of the material.
How to insulate a balcony under the lining
To insulate a balcony or loggia, you can use various heaters - the choice depends on your preferences. The most popular options:
- Styrofoam. The cheapest of all possible heaters. Sold in flat panels, mounted on mounting foam or liquid nails. This is a fragile insulation, but if you sew it up with clapboard, its strength will not matter.
- Mineral wool. Also a good option for a balcony, a little more expensive than foam. In a sense, mineral wool is even inferior to its cheaper counterpart, as it is afraid of moisture and settles over time. But if you protect the wool with a vapor barrier, then it serves perfectly.
- Styrofoam boards. A material that is now popular, which, like polystyrene, is easy to install and has excellent thermal insulation characteristics. In addition to insulation, polystyrene foam boards perfectly isolate street noise and are additionally equipped with a tongue-and-groove docking system, which allows you to achieve a flat surface without cold bridges.
- Foam heaters. They are sprayed from aerosol cans. They create a monolithic coating with good heat and sound insulation. Taking into account the fact that the balcony is a room with a small area, foam insulation will be quite a budget choice. One cylinder is enough on average for 2.5-3 square meters.
- Foil polyethylene. A simple insulation that is often used on balconies and loggias. It gives a thin layer and is suitable mainly only for apartments located in the southern regions, where the air temperature rarely drops below -10 degrees.
- Foam glass. Expensive insulation, but in terms of its characteristics it surpasses all other options. Foam glass perfectly keeps the temperature in heat and cold, is not afraid of mechanical damage, does not respond to changes in humidity.
- Foam blocks. Balconies and loggias are often insulated with this material. Lightweight foam blocks do not give a significant load, but still it is worth considering their weight. In addition, the laying of foam blocks "eats" the usable area.
To summarize the above, polystyrene is the most budget option, which is quite enough for good thermal insulation of the balcony for lining.

How to sheathe a balcony with clapboard
The surface of the balcony walls can meet you with various surprises: irregular geometry, irregularities and cracks. And with the help of lining all this is quite possible to fix.
The first stage is preparation, repair of possible defects left by the builders.
After preliminary sealing of irregularities, the crate is mounted. The simplest option is wooden beam. Select the size of the timber is under the insulation. That is, if you plan to use foam plastic 5 cm thick, then you need to choose the appropriate beam and a couple more centimeters with a margin so that a layer of air remains. It will keep the wood from the formation of fungus and mold from the side that you can no longer see.
When mounting the frame, it is important to strictly observe the level - use for this purpose measuring tools.
The lining on the frame is fixed strictly perpendicular.
All lining boards do not need to be attached to the frame. This is done through one, the second will be held on the groove-thorn system. The work, in principle, is not difficult. How it looks in practice, you can see in this step-by-step video instruction:
Some features of processing lining for a balcony
Not only the lining itself, but also the crate under it must be carefully processed. For this purpose, you will need wood preservatives and flame retardants. It is best to take compositions immediately with tinting - they will give your material noble shades.
Toning can be light or dark. For cold balconies, it is preferable to take dark shades that allow the surface to warm up as much as possible from the sun's rays.
It is desirable to protect any wood with varnish. If you're worried that the polish will smell strong, use a water-based product. Acrylic varnishes Also great protection.
