Features of OSB boards that affect the choice of paint
OSB (Oriented Strand Board) - oriented strand board - is a sheet material, made by hot pressing of coarse wood chips mixed with glue composition. OSB or OSB boards have a pronounced and rough texture, which does not play a role in carrying out construction worksbut poses a problem for the finishers. Most often, this material is decorated by staining, but before choosing a paint, you need to consider some important points:
- some paints and varnishes (paintwork materials) can poorly or unevenly lay on the OSB surface due to poor adhesion either due to the fact that the panel was treated with a special impregnation that formed a film;
- it is not recommended to use water-based coloring compositions, since excess moisture can lead to swelling of the OSB-board;
- roughness and porosity of the surface leads to increased paint consumption, which means that preliminary preparation of the material is required before painting;
- if even after careful preparation of OSB panels, the paint does not fall on them well, it means that they were stored outdoors for more than a year without reliable protection. In this case, repeated high-quality cleaning and surface treatment with antiseptic compounds is required.
What paints are used for painting OSB boards
Paints for decorating OSB boards need to be selected not only by color, but also by performance. Depending on where the panels will be installed, to paint them, you need to use paintwork materials for external (facade) or internal work.
Formulations for outdoor use
Strict requirements are imposed on the paints and varnishes used for painting the exterior walls of the house. Facade paints must be resistant to UV rays, atmospheric precipitation, extreme low and high temperatures, as well as their sharp changes. When applying paintwork materials on the OSB-board outside the building, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed.
The following types of paints are suitable for painting OSB panels used outdoors:
- Oil. This is the most reliable option, since the paint has a viscous consistency and is poorly absorbed into the OSB board. Despite the fact that this type of paintwork dries for a long time, it creates a durable protective layer with excellent performance characteristics.
- Alkyd. These paints penetrate deeply into the structure of the material, create a durable coating, are durable and resistant to low temperatures. Their disadvantage is instability to alkalis and rapid ignition.
- Acrylic. Paintwork materials of this type perfectly hide surface irregularities, provide a uniform coating and a durable protective film. Acrylic paints do not spread, dry quickly, retain their color for a long time even under the influence of UV rays. After painting, the surface of OSB-boards acquires reliable protection from moisture and temperature extremes, they can be easily washed and cleaned.
- Silicone. Such compositions are expensive, but ideal for finishing OSB boards mounted outside the building. Silicone paints are resistant to mechanical stress, moisture, cracking and fading. In addition, they can be applied over another layer of paint.
- Stain. This type of paintwork is suitable for outdoor use, and although it will not hide the texture of OSB boards, it will at least make the facade look more interesting. For better protection of the surface after drying, it must be opened with a transparent varnish.
- Special compositions with UV filters. In principle, these are conventional oil, acrylic or water based varnishes. The basis of such compositions is usually alkyd resins, varnishes with acrylics have a matte or semi-matt surface. Water-based paints and varnishes give the surface a gloss.
Compositions for interior work
When choosing a paint that will be used for interior finishing work, you need to take into account the requirements of environmental safety, since not all compositions are harmless to human health. For painting OSB-boards, which are made from wood waste, paint and varnish materials suitable for processing natural wood are suitable:
- Acrylic paint. Excellent for painting walls and floors indoors, providing a uniform, even finish.
- Alkyd compounds. They penetrate deeply into the material, creating a durable moisture-resistant film. After coating with alkyd paint, no additional varnish is required. Minus - light inflammation.
- Latex paint. It is a moisture resistant compound with thermal insulation properties, quick drying and safe for health. However, latex paint is expensive, not resistant to low temperatures, and does not prevent mold and mildew.
- Stain and varnish. This combination produces an aged wood effect and a thin, durable finish.
- Glazing glazes. It is a transparent paintwork material, applied in a thin layer, which gives the wood a certain shade and preserves its texture.
Also, oil paints and colorless varnish can be used to process OSB boards.
How to paint OSB
Obtaining a high-quality and durable paintwork is a complex process, consisting of preparatory work, direct painting and drying.
Preparatory work
In order for the paint and varnish coating on the OSB panel to be of high quality, strong, uniform and durable, an appropriate preliminary preparation of the material for painting is necessary. It is not recommended to decorate OSB boards before installation, since the joints will still need to be adjusted, their putty treatment and grinding. We will analyze all the stages of the preparatory work.
Grinding
The first stage of the preparatory work before painting the OSB-plate is cleaning the surface from contamination using manual sander. To preserve the texture, you should choose medium-grit sandpaper, approximately P120, in order to remove the protective layer. If a smooth surface is required, then first you need to walk with coarse sandpaper (P80), and then fine-grained (P200 and higher).
Removing the protective layer of the OSB board allows primer or paint to easily penetrate deep into the chipboard.
Filling irregularities with putty
To obtain a high-quality paint and varnish coating on OSB-plates, in addition to grinding, it is required to patch up various irregularities on the surface of the material. For this, an oil-glue putty is used. It is not worth filling the joints and seams between the slabs, since they still cannot be hidden and after painting they will be noticeable. The best option is to beat them with decorative strips or corners, as well as to correctly mount the panels, avoiding a chaotic arrangement of seams.
Important! Choosing OSB boards, it is worth buying a material with a complete absence or minimal content of wood bark, since during operation it often flakes off, and this spoils the overall appearance.
Coating with a primer
The final stage of preparatory work before painting OSB-boards is surface priming with acrylic, polyurethane-acrylic or alkyd varnish. The choice of primer depends on the base of the paintwork material, which will be used to paint the panels. Using a water-based varnish as a primer, dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:10.
In addition, adhesion primers are used to isolate the boards from paintwork and prevent resin bleeding onto the OSB surface.
Dyeing process
After the OSB-plate is prepared, you can proceed to its direct painting. It is important to follow the procedure:
- First, paint is applied around the perimeter of the panel with a paint brush. It is necessary to walk along the edge 2-3 times.
- Next, the surface of the material is painted with a roller. Staining must be done in one direction.
- After drying the board at a uniform temperature and without drafts, after 8 hours a second coat of paintwork materials can be applied. To preserve the texture, the layers of paint or varnish need to be as thin as possible. A thicker paint finish will provide a perfectly flat surface.
Depending on the chosen paint and varnish material, a beautiful surface with a different decorative effect can be obtained.
Opaque enamels
Before painting OSB boards used inside or outside the house in the country, it is necessary to decide on the types of paintwork materials that can hide the texture of the material. The following paints and enamels are distinguished:
- Latex. They are highly resistant to moisture, so they are a good option for buildings located near water. This type of paint has good covering ability, is undemanding to the surface condition and can withstand repeated freezing.
- Water soluble or acrylic. They are the best option for painting OSB boards: they have an affordable price, are breathable, withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, as well as temperature extremes. Can be used in winter, but cannot be used at temperatures below -20 ° C.
- Pentaphthalic. They are distinguished by high viscosity and adhesion, form a dense and smooth film. The paint hardly absorbs moisture, has excellent coverage and low consumption. It is not intended for outdoor use and dries for a long time, and is also unstable to moisture and sunlight.
- Alkyd. An excellent option for facade work, since this type of paint forms a durable moisture-resistant film and does not change color when exposed to UV rays. Due to the fact that this type of paintwork materials is able to withstand large temperature drops, it is suitable for any regions of Russia.
- Silicone. This type of paint fully meets the requirements for facades, is resistant to moisture, mechanical stress and the appearance of microcracks. Suitable for finishing previously painted boards. The only drawback is the high cost.
It is not recommended to use water-based paints for decorating OSB panels, as they can deform.
Transparent coatings
In order to preserve their texture and texture when painting OSB boards, transparent paints and varnishes with UV filters, stabilizers and water-repellent components based on alkyd resins are used. They are used for external and internal work and provide reliable protection against negative environmental influences.
To preserve the original appearance of the panels, the following compositions are used:
- impregnation - provide high-quality protection;
- azure - the most effective option, it gives a shine to the surface and retains the texture of the material;
- varnishes - create a glossy finish and protect against moisture.
Tinting
The stain perfectly emphasizes the texture of natural wood, preserves its natural pattern, and also provides reliable protection from moisture and sunlight. The required shade is obtained by adding acetone, solvent or water. Diluted stain dries within 5-10 minutes. It is applied with a spray gun / brush, and a layer of polyurethane primer is applied on top.
Fire bio-protection
OSB panels are painted not only to give an aesthetic appearance, but also to improve the performance of the material. Oriented strand board, when burning, emits corrosive and toxic phenolic smoke, which is very hazardous to health a person, therefore, the material must be covered with fire retardant compounds, especially if the OSB will be mounted inside premises.
To protect the boards, specially developed paints are used, which give the material an aesthetic appearance and flame retardant properties, as well as extend the service life. They are distinguished by high covering ability, do not lose their original color over time and protect OSB panels from rotting and the appearance of mold.
Drying painted OSB board
After applying the main layer of paint, it is necessary to allow time for it to dry, and then re-paint. Drying of the finishing layer occurs naturally while maintaining a constant temperature, which is recommended by the manufacturer. In addition, there should be no drafts in the room in which the painted OSB panels are drying, and the air humidity should not exceed 60%.
Features of decorative staining
No matter how carefully the OSB-plate is prepared and polished, it will not be possible to completely hide its characteristic texture and pattern with ordinary paint. In addition, this decor is not suitable for every interior. However, there are several ways to decorate the panels and get the original effect of old surfaces, plaster and masonry.
Artificial aging effect
To get the effect of an old surface, you need to use special varnishes and patina. This method makes it possible to smooth out strong protrusions while maintaining the original texture and texture. To obtain the effect of an aged surface, the slab is sanded, after which a primer with a barrier composition is applied. Then the panel is covered with a pigment primer, after drying it is sanded and then patina is applied. Once dry, the patina also needs to be sanded to obtain a crisp wood grain. The decoration is completed by painting in the selected color using acrylic varnish. If desired, you can get a matte or glossy surface.
Imitation stone surface
This technology requires a lot of time and patience, since decorating with natural stone implies multi-layer staining. First of all, an image of a stone pattern is selected, preferably not too intricate, and applied to the surface to be decorated. Next, the slab is treated with soil with a basic shade, usually light. The surface of the OSB board does not need to be sanded, and the paint is best applied with a spray gun.
After the paint has dried, the surface of the slab should be lightly sanded to emphasize and deeper the texture of the material. Now you can apply a masonry outline to the OSB with a pencil, which is fixed with a darker paint. Further, individual "stones" are tinted with other shades to add volume. If necessary, you can update the contour, and after the paint has dried, cover the entire surface with varnish.
Plaster effect
A very popular option for decorating OSB boards. To create the effect of plaster, you will need to sand to remove the protective wax layer and prime the lumber, then apply the paint of the desired color. When the surface is dry, sand it again with fine-grained emery paper. For greater impact, you can use a pearlescent composition or patina. The final stage is covering the cladding with a transparent or tinted varnish.
A few words in conclusion
OSB boards are a convenient and practical material suitable for various finishing works, but its appearance is not very aesthetic. The problem is solved by decorating the panels and the way of envy of the personal preferences of the owner of the house or apartment. We hope that the information provided in this article will help when you decide to use OSB slabs to decorate the walls, floor or facade in your home.
