Your home should be beautiful from the front door to the chimney exit. The house begins with a porch, for beauty it is laid out with tiles - beautiful and easy to clean. But this is only the first year, the porch does not look like itself for the second winter. Tiles crack, fly off. And I want beauty, the owner is rearranging the tiles. And so every two or three winters. But what if the tiles shoot off the porch? You need to think, not skip physics lessons at school and do everything according to the rules once.

Why does the tile fly off and crack?
The tiles laid on any surface are glued with a special solution. Man cannot tear off such glue, but nature can. Because nature knows the laws of physics and skillfully uses them. In this case, the whole essence of the phenomenon is the transition of water from one state of aggregation to another. In simple terms, this means that when it freezes, water (already ice) expands, and a vertical force arises. Where does the water come from? And there is always a lot of water around us.
The porch (since we are talking about the porch) lies on the ground. There is always a lot of water in the soil. It doesn't matter what the porch is made of, what material - wood, concrete or brick. All materials are more or less hygroscopic, i.e. they absorb water. Materials are porous in structure - they contain tiny channels. And in nature there is a phenomenon of capillarity. This means that due to the internal adhesion of water to the walls of the microchannel, water moves from places where it exists in large quantities (in the soil on which the porch lies), to its upper surface. And calmly remains there until winter. But in winter it freezes, turns into ice, which, according to the laws of nature, requires more free space. But initially it is not. Below - the material of the porch, on top - the owner glued the tiles. Downward movement of the porch is impossible, the porch rests against the globe. And you can move the stupid tile. Well, the ice moves it. Up, i.e. tears off the porch. And no glue can interfere with this, only delay the process a little in time. It will tear it off anyway, not in the first winter, so in the second. Grouting will protect from water from above, but will not protect from water from below. Namely, it becomes ice and tears off the tile.
The result of the reasoning is as follows. Water penetrates under the tiles not from above, not from rains and melted snow, but from below. And the tile must be protected from this water, insulated.
Tile protection
The porch structure should not have voids. In the voids, water will surely accumulate, which will calmly tear off the tiles. Best of all, from this point of view, the base of the porch should be made of concrete with one fill. There will be voids in the brickwork. It would be good to make a concrete base at the beginning of summer, withstand the cycle of concrete hardening and veneer until winter. Unlined concrete after wintering loses its properties, and it is already pointless to revet it. The surface of the hardened concrete must be primed, dried well and only then waterproofed.
It is better to take specialized tiles for covering the porch. It possesses a set of necessary properties - high mechanical strength, resistance to sudden temperature changes. The material must have high adhesion (for more effective interaction with adhesives, its front surface must resist sliding).
To preserve the tile cladding, the main task of the builders is to prevent moisture from getting between the tile and the porch structure. To do this, you need to correctly perform shut-off waterproofing. Its meaning is that it is necessary to interrupt the path of capillary rise of water. If done to the maximum, then it is necessary to isolate from the ground the base of the porch, buried in the ground, and the top layer of concrete, i.e. narrower steps, from the rest of the bottom of the entire porch structure. These activities are carried out both by laying waterproofing materials such as roofing material, and by special additives in the manufacture of concrete mixture. The main thing is to prevent the appearance of water between the concrete of the porch structure and the tiles.
In the picture above, the shut-off waterproofing is shown in red.
Conclusion
For some reason, in real life, most of the master builders who consider themselves professionals do not attach due importance to the correct technology for making a porch. Therefore, in suburban settlements, and even in large cities, you can see many dilapidated porches.
