It is strange in the age of developing technologies to see how anyone uses nails at all. And what is it for if they have long been invented self-tapping screws - efficient and reliable fasteners. Nevertheless, it is difficult to convince roofers that self-tapping screws are better than nails. Let's see why this is so and why such a choice should be respected.

Interesting fact: roofers with extensive experience prefer to fix the roofing material not just with nails, but with black nails. Why not stainless steel, because, it would seem, it is much better than ferrous metal, which is prone to corrosion? And the point is just corrosion - after all, when a black nail, even if a little overgrown with rust, its adhesion to the board increases significantly. So the answer to the question is very simple. But more modern craftsmen use brushed nails for the roof.

For lathing construction, brushed nails are an excellent choice. And the strength properties of this fastener are superior to those of self-tapping screws.
Only screw nails can argue with this. They also have notches, but they look like a drill. So when you drive a nail like this, it turns and screws into the wood.
Self-tapping screws against nails: which is better?
On the one hand, self-tapping screws have a lot of advantages. Let's start with the obvious. When the wind is strong outside roofing material vibrates so that the nails slowly leave their nests if they do not have an additional notch for the hitch. But the self-tapping screw sits tightly in the crate, and so tightly that it would rather crush the roofing material than pop out by itself.
When using a self-tapping screw, you can manually very finely adjust the degree of pressing of the material to the batten. This is very helpful when working with complex roof geometries. If the wood has dried up over time, the self-tapping screw can be tightened, this is also not bad.
But in this situation, there is not much sense in adding nails, you can still accidentally hit the roof and damage it. Usually, such fasteners are folded from the inside after the wood has dried, in order to tighten the material and secure the roof more reliably.
But we must admit that in terms of the rate of corrosion damage, self-tapping screws are inferior to nails. Even anodizing does not give an impressive result. And, of course, the self-tapping screw cannot be bent, it will simply break with such an effort.
If we talk about the price, then nails are cheaper, and several times. And finally, they differ from self-tapping screws in flexibility, that is, they bend with natural displacement, and do not break and do not lose their heads, like self-tapping screws.
What else can be compared? The very process of working with nails is more difficult: you missed - hit on your fingers or on metal.
What conclusion can be drawn from all this? First of all, you should respect the choice of roofers, because they make it consciously and this choice has strong arguments. If you decide to fix the roofing material yourself, then calculate your budget, estimate, which is more profitable for you, and, if possible, buy galvanized brushed nails, they are not let you down.
