Is it necessary to insulate gas blocks?
By definition, aerated concrete is a cellular material. There are three types of this building material: aerated concrete blocks, foam concrete and gas silicate. All of them have excellent properties to maintain the temperature and microclimate in the room.
The undoubted advantage of aerated concrete is its complete environmental friendliness. No toxic emissions when heated or cooled. Plus, this material has become mega-popular due to its convenient and simple installation, the speed with which the walls are erected, and the lightweight load on the foundation.
But there is one significant nuance: all these properties will work until the gas blocks have collected water and frozen. And after that - you are waiting for continuous chagrin.
So the issue of insulation in this situation is far from idle.
Why polystyrene needs to be insulated
Well, first of all, because you are unlikely to find something more effective. Polyfoam does not shrink, does not deform, does not collect water - what, it would seem, could be better?
Plus, polystyrene is now produced in such interesting versions that you can insulate the facade with it without additional finishing.
If you insulate your home with Styrofoam, you will soon notice significant savings in heating costs. And it's good that the issue of insulation can be started at any time, not at the construction stage, but if necessary, then much later.
And everything would be fine in this barrel of honey, if not for the fly in the ointment, which spoils the whole picture.
Why gas block + foam = disaster
And so, it turns out, you take an inexpensive polystyrene, you insulate your house with it, then you bitterly regret it, but nothing can be fixed, even if you remove this ill-fated insulation. And if you do not live in hot regions where there is no frost in principle, then it is better not to even try to experiment.
If a house from an aerated block has been with you for some time and has already encountered temperature changes, then without waterproofing, moisture has already formed inside it. There is already a zero dew point, and then covering it with foam will not fix anything, but will only make it worse. You can try to mount the insulation so that there are no cold bridges and no gaps, but the dew point, again, will not go anywhere.
Polyfoam, in principle, is used for insulation only when there is no way out. That is, literally - if you have to walk in felt boots in the house. And the main reason, most likely, is that the walls are not thick enough. Saved on the walls - the foam will help you little here.
Why foam is a last resort
Polyfoam as insulation is only suitable for insulating the foundation or floors of the first floor. Otherwise, it is a harmful and unstable insulation. And if you chose gas blocks because of their environmental friendliness, then using foam is like watering roses with gasoline.
This insulation burns, emits poisonous smoke, interferes with normal air and moisture exchange, spreads formaldehydes and other toxins. Professional builders do not insulate their houses with such material, no matter how cheap the foam is.
