There will be almost no joints on the coating, and those that do exist will be airtight. A wall well pasted over with linoleum often looks better than a wall pasted over with tiles. No need to clean the joints between the tiles. The tightness of the seam is required, otherwise the substrate of the material will become damp - and mold will appear on the wall. Even installing a skirting board does not guarantee protection against water infiltration.
