Material matters
An unmistakable choice - if the skirting board material is identical to the floor material. Wooden (veneered) skirting boards are used for interiors with solid wood, parquet or high-quality laminate floors.
The peculiarity of installing such a material is that the walls under it must be perfectly flat. But if there are flaws in the geometry, then it is better to choose a baseboard from MDF. It will fit into the interior with linoleum, carpet and inexpensive laminate.
If the floors are made of porcelain stoneware or ceramic tiles, marble and mosaics, then you need to choose a ceramic skirting board.
Aluminum skirting boards are not often found, they are usually selected for special interiors with an industrial character.
Finally, plastic materials are cheap and easy to install. Equipped with a cable channel, which is very convenient, bend in any direction and fasten in a couple of minutes.
Principles for choosing the color of the skirting board
There are 4 basic principles of color selection that work as universal ones. But one of them, perhaps, can be called archaic. At least now it is no longer customary to do so - to select a plinth to match the floor. As the designers say, the result is a trough that is unattractive and unremarkable.
This option is not suitable if you are using wallpaper for finishing the walls. In this case, it is better to select the plinth to match the door frames or door leaf. This option encloses your walls as if in a frame, emphasizing the style of decoration.
If you are ready for bold experiments, then you can play on contrasts and choose a skirting board with a contrasting finish. In this case, you will get a bright accent that will need to be supported in the rest of the room decor.
Skirting board height
The height of the skirting board depends on several factors. If you have a small room with low ceilings, then it is worth stopping at a narrow finish.
Standard heights up to 70 mm - for standard apartments and classic interiors.
The listed recommendations are not an axiom. In each case, the selection of finishing materials must be approached individually, taking into account your taste and style features of the interior.
