What is a spray gun, how it works and what is it for

A spray gun is a special spray that is designed to transfer paints and varnishes from a container to a surface to be painted. The device is arranged very simply. In most cases, a spray gun is a gun that is connected to a container for liquid paint, varnish, putty or other substance. The gun has two channels: for paint and for air. When the user pulls the trigger of the gun, paint along with a stream of compressed air or simply under the pressure of a piston bursts out of the spray gun nozzle, forming a so-called torch - a special shaped cloud, consisting of microscopic droplets paints. This torch transports the material to the work surface.

The scope of application of spray guns is extremely wide. These tools are used during construction and renovation in order to prime and paint walls, whitewash ceilings. With their help, cars are painted, furniture, doors and windows are varnished. The advantage of spray guns over traditional rollers and brushes is a much faster, more accurate and even paint without sagging. In addition, paint and varnish materials are transferred to the work surface much more efficiently than with manual work, so the cost of a spray gun can rather be called an investment in the future.

Choosing a spray gun: what to look for

Spray gun type. These devices can belong to one of several types - with one purpose, but a different principle of operation:

  • mechanical - the simplest devices in which paint is sprayed due to vulgar muscle strength. These devices are notable for their low price and low performance, but you can work with them anywhere. Most often, such sprayers are used in summer cottages for spraying beds.
  • pneumatic - here the paint is transferred to the work surface by a stream of compressed air. As a rule, these are professional spray guns. The fact is that pneumatic devices require not only the spray gun itself, but also a very expensive and bulky compressor to operate. At the same time, the quality of painting of spray guns of this type is the highest among competitors.
  • electric - in most cases these are relatively simple and affordable household models. In terms of the quality of painting, they are significantly inferior to pneumatic spray guns, but they are much more compact and easier to use. The simplest and most inexpensive electric sprayers do not even use compressed air in their work - in such devices, the paint is blown out by a plunger pump. In machines of a higher class, their own small compressors are used, which allows to significantly improve the result of work, making it comparable to pneumatic spray guns.

Type of food. Electric spray guns can be mains and battery. The first ones require connection to an outlet for work - these are productive machines, among which there are professional and semi-professional options. The latter cost with rechargeable batteries: such spray guns are usually heavier and more expensive, but autonomy and the ability to work without carrying kilometers of extension cords, redeem all possible limitations.

Power. This parameter indirectly characterizes the performance of electric spray guns and pneumatic compressors. High power means that the device can easily work with dense paints and varnishes for a long time and without overheating. For household spray guns, the power rarely exceeds the 500 watts limit. Most compressors for pneumatic applications are 1000-3000 watts.

Battery voltage. This parameter can be called a kind of analogue of power consumption for battery models: usually a high battery voltage means a high performance of the spray gun. Typically, sprayers use 12-18 volt batteries.

Pistol type. A characteristic related to pneumatic spray guns. There are three types of pistols:

  • HP (high pressure) - the most inexpensive, but not the highest quality work result and high (up to 60%) material loss when transferring the model;
  • HVLP (high volume, low pressure) - more expensive but also more efficient machines that reduce paint loss by up to 35% and provide decent coating quality;
  • LVLP (Low Volume, Low Pressure) are the most advanced machines capable of transferring up to 80% of paint to the work surface, providing a first-class finish.

Nozzle size. The larger it is, the more dense materials the spray gun can work with. For example, for ordinary liquid paint, a nozzle with a diameter of 1-3 mm is usually enough, but for putty it is already needed 6-7 mm. Usually non-standard nozzles need to be purchased separately.

The location and size of the paint canister. The paint tank in hand-held spray guns can be located above or below the gun. Its volume usually fluctuates around 0.5-1 liters. In addition, a paint tank with a volume of 6-7 liters can be located separately. There are also models that can suck paint directly from the bucket. Here the choice depends on the tasks you face.

Layout. Usually, hand-held models of spray guns with small built-in tanks belong to the category of household tools that are not very suitable for professional use. Professional devices often have a floor-mounted layout, when the motor and the paint tank are located on a separate platform, and a gun is connected to them, in which there is nothing except the sprayer. Such tools are distinguished by their large dimensions, high price and high productivity.

FAQ

What is the difference between a spray gun and a spray gun?
Nothing. A spray gun is a paint spray that uses a person's muscular strength in the work.

Is it hard to work with a spray gun or not?
Definitely lighter than brushes and rollers. Although, of course, a certain skill is needed here as well.
