In order to sew an American skirt with your own hands, you do not need to have special skills. Facilitates the task of not having to design a pattern and adjust it to the features of the figure. All you have to do is:
- Pick up the material.
- Measure the length of the product.
- Calculate the length of the frills.
Important! It is better to determine in advance the shape and color of the fabric.
Step # 1.Prepare all the necessary materials
To create a lush skirt you will need a light soft fabric:
- An organza is suitable for a woman, and for a girl it is better to buy a tulle. This material is the strongest nylon mesh, it is incredibly difficult to tear.
- You can also use a nylon chiffon with a density of 15 den and a knitted fabric for sewing a skirt.
Important! For tailoring one product will need 5-10 meters, depending on the size.
In addition to cutting the fabric for the product itself, prepare the following materials and tools:
- Atlas or crepe-satin for making a coquette( about 30 cm).
- 2 coils of thread in the tone of the fabric.
- Elastic band for the belt. The width of the rubber band should be 3 cm, and the length should be chosen according to the waist circumference.
- Satin ribbon for decorating the product. The width of the tape should be at least 2 cm, and a length of about 1 m.
- Fliseline for coquette.
- Fatine or nylon mesh for ruches.
- Scissors. Tailoring needles, pin.
- Centimeter tape.
- Card or paper for patterning.
- Iron.
Important! The appearance of the skirt largely depends on the correctly selected shades. For example, a monophonic skirt looks great with a bright top. If you decide to use several colors when sewing a product, then limit to 2-3 shades.
Step # 2.Preparation of the pattern
The American skirt differs from other products in its pomp and unusual cut. The shape of the product has something in common with a skirt-sun and a pack. To make an unusual product you will need a coquette and 2-3 wide frills, to the edge of which ruches are sewn.
To correctly calculate the width of the frill, proceed as follows:
- Measure the length of the future product from the waist. If we consider that American skirts are sewn mainly for young girls, then for a child under 1 year, the length is 25 cm, for an age of 2 to 4 years, about 35 cm, for an age of up to 10 years, 45 cm.
- From the receivedvalues subtract the length of the coquette( about 8 cm).
- Next, subtract 3.5 cm by the width of the used ruff.
- The resulting residue is divided in half. This will be the width of the frill. However, the skirt will look much more interesting if you arrange the layers in the form of tiers. To do this, make the bottom layer 2-3 cm longer.
Important! In fact, a pattern for an American skirt is not needed by oneself. It is sewn from three rectangles: one for a coquette, and two for tiers of frills. You can also use a rectangle with a width of 7 cm to cut the ruches.
To cut the stripes on the material, the rectangles are done on the cardboard. For example:
- To create a coquette, draw a rectangle with a length of 122 cm( at least two waist sizes) and a width of 20 cm. Do not forget that when cutting the fabric, add 0.5 cm to the fold and 1 cm to the seams.
- For a strip of the upper tier, draw a rectangle with a length of about 7 m.
- For the lower tier, the length of the rectangle should be about 1.5-2 times larger.
- The length of the rectangle for the ruches is 1.5-2 times longer than the scarf.
Step # 3.Cutting material:
- Fold the fabric four times for easy cutting.
- Attach a cardboard blank to the fabric.
- Hold the workpiece by hand, cut the fabric around the edge of the cardboard.
- Cut the stripes to the upper and lower tier and ruches.
- Obtain the strips in the form of rolls and set aside.
Important! If you use a nylon chiffon for sewing, then ruches are better to cut along the length of the fabric.
- From crepe-satin( satin), cut out the strips for the coquette.
- Cut out the same strips of non-woven fabric to form a coquette.
- Pour the yoke over the long side from below and from the top with non-woven fleece.
Step # 4.Sewing a lush skirt:
- Coquette stitch in a ring on the short side. Leave a small area free for gum.
- The received ring bend in half, carefully iron.
- Individual details of each frill are sewn on short sides. Should get long strips.
- Each frill is selected( individually) along the length of the coquette.
- Sew up the tiers in the upper parts, sew to the bottom of the coquette.
- Sew the details of the rucis.
- Assemble ruches, sew them to the bottom edges of the frills.
- In the coquette, put on a wide rubber band.
- Manually sew the open section of the coquette.
- From satin make a beautiful bow, sew to the coquette. Between the tiers, you can also sew a finishing tape.
As you can see, an American skirt for girls and sewing with their own hands is not an easy matter. Just imagine how your young princess will enjoy the new outfit. And to make it easier for you to calculate the material and sew the outfit, we will hold a master class.

For the master class of American skirts, we decided to choose tulle( soft knitted mesh) and satin for a flirt.
To facilitate calculations:
- Take a skirt 30 cm long and waistline of 60 cm. All measurements and cuts will be made relative to the length of the product and the waist( OT).
- For a coquette, it is necessary to make a rectangular shape with a length of 2 OT.
- For flips: the length of the pattern is 9 OT( for 1 tier) and 12 OT( for 2 tiers).
Calculate the amount of fabric per skirt and prepare the patterns from the cardboard:
- Height of 1 rectangle( coquette): 20 cm, length( at least 2 OT) 60 * 2 = 120 cm.
- Height of 2 rectangles( 1 tier): 11 cm, length9 FROM: 60 * 9 = 540 cm.
- Height of 3 rectangles( 2 levels): 11 cm, length 12 FROM: 60 * 12 = 720 cm.
- Ruffles cut with ribbons 7 cm wide.
For sewing a skirt you will need:
- Atlas(crepe-satin) with a width of at least 1.22 cm-19 cm.
- Nylon chiffon - 2 m.
- Wide elastic band( from 2,5 cm) - 0,55 cm.
- Wide satin ribbon( up to 3 cm) - 1m.
- Fatin( nylonI mesh for ruches) - 44 m.
- Flizelin with a width of 1.22 cm, length of 1 m.
So, all the measurements are made, the materials are prepared, get down to work:
- Fold the fabric four times, cut out all the necessary details on the cardboard blanks. Obtain the blanks by rolls and set aside.
- Cut the stripes from the atlas to form a coquette.
- Open non-woven fabric( glue cloth) onto strips.
- To the edge of the satin rectangle, apply adhesive fabric( fleece) and iron from the wrong side of the satin.
- Sew a coquette on the short side. Leave a small slot for the rubber band. To do this, find the middle of the short side of the part, measure off it 3 cm, put the marks and make seams between the marks.
- Open the seam and distribute the allowances on opposite sides. Glue the allowances on the seams with small pieces of "spider".This is necessary to ensure that after a while the cut for the rubber band looked neat.
- Bend the coquette in half facing up. Align the coquette on the long sides and secure with pins.
- Back from the bend 3 cm and make a stitch. At a distance of 2.5-3 cm from the first line make the second line. Iron the coquette. Now she's ready.
- With the help of a special paw for assembling the ruffle, you will form ruches from cut billets. If you do not have a special foot, proceed as follows:
- Set the maximum stitch.
- Up to the limit, increase the thread tension.
- Place the fabric under the shoulder blade with both hands and wind it behind the presser foot.
- When forming a ruffle strip, do not stitch together, but overlap one on the other. From all cut out ruches, form two ruffs of equal length.
- Connect the short sides of the upper tier to the ring. Leave 3-5 mm on the allowance. Do the same with the lower tier.
- Place the lower tier and ruche in such a way that they lie facing you. Sew the ruche overlapping to one side of the lower tier. Make a line on the side on which the ruches are collected.
- On the opposite edge of the lower tier, make the assembly. To do this, increase the tension of the upper thread and use a long stitch.
- Connect the upper and lower tiers to each other. To do this: divide both frills into equal parts and, combining them, draw a line. Join the tiers face to face. Do not forget to leave 0.5 cm for the allowance.
- If desired, sew a finishing tape between the frills. Proceed as follows:
- Bend the sections of the tiers to the upper side from the wrong side.
- Ribbon to sew on the top frill, going to the bottom, about 0.5 mm.
- Sew the tape with two seams( from the top and bottom frills).
- From each edge, recede 0.5 mm. As a result, the tape should cover the sections of the tiers.
- Make the assembly on the upper tier. Connect the upper tier with the top edge of the yoke.
- The bottom skirt is sewn to the bottom of the coquette.
- Connect the edges of the yoke together, between the top and bottom frill. Treat the edge of the yoke with a zigzag.
- Insert the rubber band and secure the ends with a hand seam.
- Cut the satin ribbon into 2 pieces of 50 cm each. Sew them on both sides of the rubber with a zigzag at a distance of 6-7 cm from the edge.
- Tie a bow, and the skirt is ready.
A very bright detail of clothes will never be superfluous in the wardrobe of any fashionista. Fantasize with the color, style and length of the tiers, and your daughter will always be a real princess on any holiday, and you will become a queen of the ball in such a dress!
