Why sconces and not other lamps?
A sconce is a wall lamp, the name is borrowed from the French and means “lever” or “hand” in translation. This type of lighting has its advantages:
- diffused soft light that does not strain your eyesight;
- the ability to use in rooms with any height of ceilings - from extremely high to minimally low;
- with the help of sconces, you can make accents in the interior and apply various light scenarios;
- the choice of shapes and styles of sconces is very wide, it is easy to choose a model to your taste;
- the cost of wall lamps is usually low - at least much lower than chandeliers and floor lamps;
- the sconces use low-power energy-saving lamps - this can significantly reduce energy costs;
- wall lamps are multifunctional and can be used for various types of lighting.
As you can see, there are a lot of reasons to choose a sconce for additional lighting.
Varieties of sconces and their design features
Wall lamps are very diverse. You can conditionally divide them into several varieties according to the principle of construction.
Fixed or adjustable sconces
By stationary models we mean those in which the direction of illumination is always the same. That is, such lamps, fixed on the wall, will direct the flow of light only in one direction. It is impossible to change this position, the design does not provide for rotary or flexible elements.
Wall lamps with stationary lighting usually have exquisite complex shades and often carry decorative functions for the interior.
Stationary sconces are flat, that is, as close as possible to the wall, and horn, in which the ceiling and lamp are mounted on a decorative bracket.
Adjustable sconces, as the name implies, are able to change the direction of the flow of light and often have a higher price.
Such sconces, without a doubt, are more convenient to use, but they have one significant drawback: they are much less decorative than stationary ones. The reason is quite simple - for good mobility and safety of operation, the shades are made as light and simple as possible. So adjustable sconces are used mainly for modern interior styles.
Closed and open sconces
Continuing to consider the design features of wall lamps, we can divide them according to another principle - the type of ceiling.
Closed are fixtures in which the lamp is completely hidden by the ceiling. The shape of the ceiling can be any: round, square, curly. Usually such devices do not have horns, fit snugly against the wall and look more like flat ceiling lights. They fit perfectly into the design of stairs or long corridors. And the ceiling lamps are made of transparent or translucent glass and plastic.
The transitional type of fixtures is a sconce in which the shades are represented by halves. The halves are usually placed below.
Often, open sconces are combined with an adjustment mechanism - such devices can illuminate the workspace.
Stylistic directions of wall lamps
Manufacturers offer various stylistic solutions, so you can easily find a lamp that will fit into your interior as much as possible:
- classic - this style is characterized by lamps with imitation of candlesticks and a ceiling made in the form of a lampshade;
- hi-tech is conciseness itself;
- loft - industrial forms, as in the workshops of Soviet times;
- Provence is an excellent occasion to turn to manual craftsmanship. In the design of the bra, lace, floral print, hand knitting will be appropriate;
- vintage models - they are distinguished by a shabby look and an old shape;
- gothic - usually combined with imitation of candlesticks;
- Scandinavian style - dictates light colors and the presence of natural details;
- country (or rustic style) - logically decorated with natural wood;
- modern - characterized by conciseness in design, but using the most modern materials.
How to organize lighting with a sconce
Sconces in every room have their own meaning and purpose. Most often, this lighting device is used in rooms where the main purpose is relaxation. Bedroom or nursery - that's where sconces will be in great demand.
The specifics of placing sconces in the bedroom
No one needs bright light in the bedroom. There should be an intimate calm atmosphere with subdued lights. For lighting, exceptionally soft tones with warm shades are selected. Sconces in this case can serve as a lamp for reading a book before going to bed and a night light.
In this option, you can leave the sconces as the main source of lighting. They will work only on part of the room, and the rest will be illuminated only during the day from the window.
If there is a mirror in the bedroom, then placing lighting devices along its edges will greatly increase the effect, making the room brighter. In this case, it is better to choose matte shades to avoid too bright highlights.
Another nuance of the sconce in the bedroom is the convenient location of the switch. You will turn off the lamp before going to bed, and you are unlikely to want to get out of bed to do this.
Bra in the nursery: what to consider
For a children's room, a sconce is a good and logical choice. With the help of several wall fixtures, it is easy to organize different lighting modes for games and recreation.
But it is important to ensure that the light from the devices does not disturb the child and gets directly into the eyes. If the children are small, it is worth raising the lamp as much as possible so that they cannot accidentally reach it.
High or low: how to install a sconce
Properly planning the installation of lighting fixtures is very important. Sometimes shortcomings in this direction spoil the whole impression and lead to additional costs.
There are proven standards for the location of sconces in a room. If we are talking about a bedside location, then the installation height should be sufficient to read a book before going to bed, but at the same time not interfere with the person who sleeps nearby. That is, optimally - at the height of the head of a person sitting on a bed. At the same time, it is important that the switch is located low and convenient, you can bring it to the level of the bed.
For a hallway or corridor, it makes sense to place the sconces above eye level and so as not to accidentally catch the lamp when moving. On objects such as stairs, corridors and hallways, it is better to choose lamps that are compact, flat, without horns. That will be much safer.
What lamps to use for sconces
It would seem that this question has long been answered, however, there are still doubters.
Another thing is that not all types of sconces are suitable for LED lamps. Unfortunately, lamp manufacturers are still far from any decorative ideas. It turns out that if you choose lamps with a shape without a ceiling, you will either have to put up with the ridiculous look in which a round light bulb flaunts in the candlestick, or choose an incandescent lamp. Here, as they say, beauty requires sacrifice. If the lamp is hidden by a ceiling, choose definitely LED. Let's hope together that lamps based on LEDs of the original form will soon appear on mass sale.
Sconce switches: convenient and most convenient
There are several options for wall light switches, and it is preferable to choose one for each location.
The lace or chain works very simply: just pull this switch and the on and off mechanism will work.
Another option is a sensor. This is a difficult but very interesting option for the same bedroom. With one touch, you can dim the light, make it brighter, or simply turn off the appliance. It is extremely convenient if the other half is sleeping next to you in bed. A light touch and the light is minimal, but you are still comfortable to surf the net with a laptop.
There are sconces, which are controlled by a button located on the case. Not the most convenient option, because you have to constantly look for it in the dark. It would be much more logical to place the switch, push-button or keyboard, somewhere in the usual place, for example, at the entrance or next to the bed.
Interesting examples of sconce placement
Wall lamps can be positioned in different ways, the main thing is that the light does not hurt the eyes and it is convenient to use the switch.
