The initial meaning of the door leaf is to protect it from the cold and attack from enemies. Strictly speaking, inside the house, doors are not really needed - who is there to defend against? The only thing that may be needed in an apartment is to isolate the rooms from noise or extraneous odors, for example, from the kitchen. But many people refuse doors altogether, especially when it comes to small apartments. Each door here is almost a square meter of occupied space. Removing the door leaf and widening the opening is one of the traditional design techniques for increasing space. Sometimes they even remove the whole block in the partition between the rooms to make it more spacious.
It is clear that premises with a narrowly focused purpose cannot remain without a door leaf, for example, a bathroom or a closet, a wardrobe. It is undesirable to deprive a child's room or bedroom of privacy. If the situation is hopeless, such rooms should still be closed at least by curtains or sliding doors.
It is actually not so easy to give up the door leaf in the kitchen. Keep in mind that the cooking process is associated with fumes, odors and grease deposits. And if you fry fish without a closed door, even a good cooker hood will not rid your apartment of the obsessive aroma. Something all the same should at least temporarily enclose this place. Let not a door, but a screen or movable partition.
On the other hand, the removal of the door promotes good air circulation in small spaces. This is very important for small and stuffy apartments.
In what situation can you refuse the door leaf:
- if you decide to keep the shape of the doorway, then you will visually enlarge the passage;
- if you want to make an arch, you will need to plan it so that it organically combines with the height of the ceilings and the style of the interior;
- if there is an idea to make an opening of a complex geometric shape. In this case, it must be remembered that narrow door frames are not suitable for this design;
- when combining the space of the kitchen and living room - the opening can be made as large as possible and a bar counter can be placed in it.
Ideas for the shape of a doorway without a leaf
If you have conceived such an alteration, you need to carefully consider the shape of the opening. There are several options:
The standard size of an open door frame can be easily changed by removing part of the wall. If you are unsure of how to do this safely, hire a professional.
Arched passages are round, trapezoidal and even triangular. For the design of arches, drywall is mainly used, which is mounted on a frame made of metal or wood.
If you have chosen an interior in one of the ultra-modern styles, instead of a round arch, choose a trapezoidal or even triangular. At the same time, the opening looks strictly and ultra-modern, but only in rooms with high ceilings. Conventional high-rise ceilings, complete with such arches, create a feeling of heaviness and crampedness.
Semi-arches are an interesting solution for standard apartments. With this design, one part of the opening is rounded, and the second remains rectangular.
Portals with a traditional rectangular design look good in a classic interior, especially if they are decorated with natural wood or MDF imitation wood. In this type, decorations from carved platbands are appropriate, which will contrast with the color of the walls. Such portals are made wider than ordinary doorways, creating a visual sense of spaciousness.
Nobody says that strict form is the only possible solution. The opening can have edges in the form of a wave or with some intricate curves. All original asymmetrical solutions look great in fashionable designs.

Decoration with stone or brick
To decorate the doorway, you can use natural or artificial stone. The shape of the stone can also be different: chopped edges or brick-like. Compared to finishing with other materials, the stone benefits greatly in terms of durability. It does not fade, does not lose its shape and always looks expensive.
Artificial stone, among other things, does not give an increased load on the base; it is usually made from a gypsum mixture, so that the parts are lightweight and at the same time environmentally friendly.
Artificial natural stone comes in the form of rock, cobblestone or brick. In principle, you can even make such a beautiful finish with your own hands by pouring the plaster mixture into molds.
Instead of plaster, concrete is often used - such stones are more durable and practically eternal. They are resistant to any mechanical damage and even weathering. If you decide to use the opening somewhere not inside the house, but, for example, on the veranda, then it is better to give preference to concrete.
What is the result of using natural or artificial stone in a doorway? The design looks natural, the natural texture fits perfectly into almost any interior.
The designer is recommended to combine the colors of stone and furniture - this way the transition will be the most organic. If necessary, the base plaster or concrete material can be painted with acrylic paints, adding bronze or contrasting tones for showiness.
Decoration of openings with clinker tiles
Tile is another durable material that can be used to decorate a doorway. In terms of strength and ease of installation, it is not inferior to stone, but the tile has a perfectly flat surface, so when planning an interior, you need to think about how this the opening will be combined with the rest of the decor and will it not look too "sterile", creating the feeling of not a residential, but some kind of public premises.
This design looks good in the kitchen if it is combined with an apron or other decorative elements.
Laying tiles on the opening is no different from the usual, the seams are processed with grout.
It is preferable to use a special tile adhesive as an adhesive; liquid nails may not cope with the load.
Decoration with natural wood or MDF trim
Wooden or MDF panels are a popular material for decoration, including openings without doors. How to refine the portal in this way?
How to arrange an interior portal with natural wood? For lathing for such a design, wooden slats are usually used, and the cladding parts are fixed with self-tapping screws. On sale you can find kits for decorating portals, in which parts are attached using a groove-tenon system.

Simple and aesthetically pleasing: plaster
Plastering the opening is the simplest solution of all. This finishing method is also the most practical: you will never have any problems with cleaning or repairing the finishing.
The thickness of the plaster layer should be no more than 2 cm, otherwise cracks will appear on the surface after drying. It is better to apply two or three layers of plaster, one centimeter thick, with complete drying, than one thick layer, which will hump or crack in a day.
PVC finish for doorways
When you think about the cost of finishing, PVC panels are the most economical choice. They look great on window and door slopes. Plus, modern panels are fireproof so you don't have to worry. PVC ignites at a temperature 100 degrees higher than fiberboard, and in addition to everything, it is a self-extinguishing material.
Laminate finish
If the openings turned out to be wide, then a good finishing option in this case is laminate. Looks pretty noble, and natural shades look good with flooring and furniture.
The advantage of this method is that it helps to cope with wide openings, for which traditional extensions are not suitable.
For the final design, use moldings and platbands of suitable quality.
What will happen to the doorway if you use stucco
Stucco molding is a good way to highlight the opening against the background of the wall. On sale there are ready-made models of polyurethane or similar materials. Decorative details that can be combined into whole compositions will complement the design. For framing, it is preferable to use a smooth, even molding that will combine the parts into one whole.
Textiles in the doorway
For some time, textiles in the doorway were considered bad form, but fashion has its own cyclical nature, and such a decor solution is again in trend.
