If you think about the shape of the roof, you will probably notice that roofs of complex shapes are mainly located above modern houses. Sheds are a rarity. Such roof structures can be seen only above garages and other outbuildings. And yet this is strange, you must admit, because a pitched roof is, it would seem, simple and economical, since the consumption of materials is minimal. Why are they still not being chosen, and is this the right thing to do? We will understand all the nuances.
How a pitched roof is arranged and why it is beneficial
A single slope roof is a fairly simple structure. It removes atmospheric moisture due to the fact that one edge is located above the other.
What are the advantages of such a design? First of all, the structure of the rafter system is very simplified. You can calculate such a design yourself, even if you have never done something like this before. The risk of making a mistake is minimal if you have knowledge of geometry at least at the 7th grade level of a comprehensive school.
When building a pitched roof, you will save a lot on lumber - this is a fact. Against the background of the last catastrophic rise in forest prices, this is significant. In addition to lumber, you will save at least 2 times on fasteners. Plus there is no need to buy additional roofing elements. And fewer additional parts means fewer future repair problems.
Why shed roofs are unpopular
It would seem that a pitched roof is good for everyone. Why, then, do developers choose more complex geometry?
Let's start with insulation. If the roof has a complex geometry, then the natural insulation is the air gap. And the pitched roof is much lower, respectively, the layer is smaller. And to keep the house warm, you will have to additionally insulate the roof.
The second significant point is the drainage system. The cost of gutter parts will be reduced by at least half, but given the large area, the system needs to be made more powerful. And reinforced parts are more expensive. This will require more hardware than usual.
When planning a pitched roof, be sure to take into account the direction of the wind. On the highest side, the wind load will be maximum, so if it is exactly turned in that direction, it is better to abandon this idea.
The disadvantage of single-slope skates, without a doubt, is the lack of attic space. A roof slope of only 35 degrees does not provide sufficient height. In principle, the slope can be increased to 60 degrees, but in this case, you will have to fork out for the rafters for almost the same amount as for the gable roof. And if you make such a high rise, there will be a risk of losing the roof during strong winds.
And, finally, opponents of this type of roofing are the last and weighty argument to put forward the appearance of the house. But here the opinion is purely subjective: it is difficult to find comrades for taste and color, as they say.
