Linoleum and its properties
Linoleum is a man-made material made mainly of two components. Natural linoleum is a canvas (Latin word "linum"), impregnated with oil (Latin word "oleum"). In artificial linoleum, the canvas is replaced by a material resembling fiberglass, and the impregnation is a synthetic compound, and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating is applied on the front side. This flooring is significantly cheaper than other floor coverings. For its installation, it is not at all necessary to involve professional builders, all the work can be done by hand. Linoleum is easy to cut with a sharp knife. It is sold in rolls, it is easy to transport it to the place of use.
But with prolonged use, linoleum overdries and hardens, small cracks may appear on it.
Linoleum is subject to shrinkage, this should be taken into account when cutting it into measured pieces. The shrinkage margin should be 2 cm for the length of the canvases up to 6 m, 3-4 cm for up to 10 m, 5-6 cm for more than 10 m. The good thermal conductivity of linoleum makes it an indispensable material for covering warm floors.
Linoleum laying technology
Laying technologies will differ slightly, depending on which base the new coating is being laid on. You can lay the coating on a concrete or wooden floor, but the base must be extremely flat and smooth, otherwise all defects will appear after a while. Cracks in the concrete base must be repaired with mortar, and after hardening, sanded. It is best to cover a wooden floor with a sheet of plywood. If one sheet is not enough, then you need to pay special attention to the filler of the joints of the sheets. After preparation, the base should be treated with an antiseptic solution.
Experts advise against laying new linoleum on top of the old one. The previous coating must be removed and everything must be cleaned.
Before starting work, you need to prepare all the necessary tools and materials:
- scissors (race) or tape measure;
- hammer;
- notched trowel;
- small roller for rolling linoleum;
- sharp construction knife,
- nails;
- putty;
- double-sided tape for rigid styling;
- screws;
- wooden boards;
- adhesive composition.
The work itself begins with cutting out the material. It is necessary to leave allowances for shrinkage. In this case, it is advisable to correctly combine the elements of the picture. The cut strips need to be expanded, spread evenly and left for three days. Only then start styling. You can fix linoleum on double-sided tape, on glue or fix by pressing the plinth. If scotch tape is chosen, then a grid of scotch tape is made on the floor, a covering is carefully laid on it. The glue method is very time consuming, requires a long drying of the glue, and takes at least a week. This method is advisable for arranging large areas.
Elimination of styling defects
After finishing work on laying the coating, it may turn out that the material is lying in waves or swellings have appeared. The reasons may be different - the edges of the sheet rest against the walls, the base is poorly processed, the material did not lie down after unwinding the roll.
There are many ways to eliminate blisters. A large bubble can be pierced at the very top with a thick needle, squeeze air out from under it, inject glue into the hole with a syringe and put a load on top. And if the wave is parallel to the wall, then you should release the pressing plinth, cut a strip along the wall so that a gap is obtained and it is not very tight to nail it back. The waves and small bubbles themselves are leveled by heating the curved surface of the linoleum, followed by pressing a heavy load.
