What are gas alarms and their types

First of all, a gas alarm is a device that detects the presence of carbon monoxide and combustible gases in the atmosphere. Such devices are not a novelty, they have been used in industrial facilities for many years, and now devices for household use have also appeared on sale.

Industrial LPGs are complex devices with multiple sensors. In contrast, household options are simpler, because their main task is to signal an alarm, and not to measure the percentage of the presence of harmful substances.

Alarms can be targeted for the presence of a specific substance: methane, propane or carbon monoxide. And mixed options are better suited for domestic needs. These are usually devices indicating carbon monoxide and propane. If we are talking about a room with a solid fuel stove, a CO only sensor is sufficient.

When and how does the sensor work?

The point of installing this device is to make it work on time, that is, to stop the leak before a catastrophe. To have a margin of time, a threshold was set at which the device already reacts: methane - up to 1%, carbon monoxide - up to 0.01%, propane - up to 0.5%.

An audible signal and a warning light turn on. If the sensor is equipped with an electromagnetic cut-off device, then the gas supply is shut off. When connected to the system, it is possible to forcibly turn on the hood and send a signal to the fire brigade.

How to install a gas sensor

You can install the gas level sensor with your own hands - it does not require any special skills. However, it is important to properly position the sensor as close to the potential leak as possible.

If you are unsure of where to install the sensor, consult your gas service. This is usually the wall near the boiler or stove. The distance between the sensor and the device should be no more than 4 meters and no less than 1 meter. It is not necessary to install the sensor where grease and dust will settle on it, steam will enter. It makes no sense to place the sensor near the ventilation duct or near the place where paints and varnishes are stored.

The mounting height of the device depends on the type of device. Devices for detecting methane leakage are placed under the ceiling, propane - half a meter above the floor. To determine the dangerous concentration of carbon monoxide, the sensor is mounted at a height of 1.8–2 meters from the floor.

How to maintain a gas alarm

This is a very simple set and forget device that does not require your constant attention. The only thing that needs to be done periodically is to wipe the dust on it.

But if you installed the sensor, then from time to time (preferably annually) you need to check its operation. This can be done by specialists who regularly check the rest of the gas equipment.

How this system works - in a small video review:

It remains only to note that the simplest sensor costs about 300 rubles. Agree that this is a negligible price to pay for the safety of your family. Do you use such sensors? Share your experience in the comments!
