Curtains in the interior of any room play no less important role than furniture or wall decoration. This means that you should choose this element very carefully. More recently, pleated paper curtains have become popular. Germany is considered the birthplace of such "curtains". Outwardly, they resemble corrugated paper blinds. The design looks non-trivial and allows you to decorate the interior without multi-layered and volumetric elements "stealing" the space.

To achieve the desired level of illumination, you can combine curtains from different paper

"Curtains" made of paper are made in vertical and horizontal modifications. Since paper for pleated curtains is used of different densities, such a design of the window opening does not interfere with the penetration of light into the room. On the contrary, scattered rays spread throughout the room, creating a special coziness and comfort.

The indisputable advantage of such curtains is the ease of their installation and subsequent operation. It is this configuration of curtains that allows you to stylishly design a window opening of any size and shape. For decorating custom windows - this is a real find.

Paper curtains on a trapezoidal window

It is quite easy to decorate a window with beveled corners with paper curtains.

The disadvantages of such curtains include their fragility. After all, paper curtains cannot be washed or cleaned, and dust invariably accumulates on them. Therefore, pleated blinds are considered a one-season curtain. In addition, in the event of a breakdown, it is almost impossible to repair the structure. This type of curtain should be used very carefully and carefully, and in the event of a malfunction, it is easier to buy or make new ones than to repair.

Although ready-made pleated curtains are offered in a rather limited range of colors, they can be used to make the interior interesting and unusual. For example, in a room with dark walls and furniture, white pleats look very advantageous. They become a bright accent and harmoniously dilute the "boring" colors. And in a room with light walls and upholstered furniture, a contrasting curtain of a brighter color - pink or purple - looks perfect.

Choosing pleated paper curtains to the style of the interior, do not worry too much, such a model is appropriate to complement the oriental color, will support minimalist trends in a modern style, and even in a classic interior design will look very worthy.

The design of paper curtains is very simple and available for do-it-yourself production.

Roman curtains

The main advantage of paper curtains is the ability to make them yourself. For example, Roman blinds are created from wallpaper left over after renovation. The exclusivity of such "curtains" is considered an indisputable advantage. You can rest assured that no one else has such curtains.

You yourself can choose the color of the paper you like

First, let's decide on the necessary materials and tools:

  1. Wallpaper. They should be enough to cover windows in one room. The creation of Roman blinds from different pieces of wallpaper for the same room is not encouraged.
  2. Sharp scissors. It is thanks to them that there will be no creases on thick paper.
  3. Awl for holes.
  4. Ruler and pencil.
  5. Decorative cord.
  6. Stapler, tape, glue.
  7. Retainer. Typically, a standard clothing option used for sportswear is used.

The easy way

We pass, in fact, to the process. The main thing is to follow the instructions exactly, and then the result is guaranteed to please you.

Calculation of paper curtains depending on the size of the window

The scheme of making curtains from wallpaper

First, let's get acquainted with the process of creating classic Roman blinds. We make measurements. As usual, two quantities are required: length and width. It is worth noting that a paper curtain can be located inside the frame or on top of it, this must be taken into account when measuring the window. We decided on the width, but the length of the canvas is measured taking into account future folds. To do this, add about a fourth to the length of the window opening. That is, if the length of the window (glass) is 120 cm, then another 30 cm must be added to form folds. The total length will be 150 cm. Having cut out the canvas of the required size, on its seamy side we make markings for the folds. With a regular pencil, we draw vertical stripes at a distance of 2 or 3 cm.

Cut the canvas to the desired size

Mark the folds with the selected step

Then we get to the fun part. If you have not forgotten how in the elementary grades they made an "accordion" from a sheet of paper, then the process will not be difficult. To make the folds as even as possible, we make the first one by putting a ruler inside. This will allow you not only to make an even fold, but also to squeeze the paper as much as possible.

Folding the curtain accordion from the wallpaper canvas

Gently fold the accordion by running your fingers along the fold lines

This is the most time consuming process. The main thing is not to rush and carefully check each subsequent fold. Allowing the slightest skew, the entire remaining canvas will turn out to be crooked. The result should be a non-springing accordion.

It is important that the folds are the same size.

In the next step, we make holes for the decorative cord. We retreat 10-15 cm from the edge of the curtain and use a sharp awl to pierce two holes on each side. In this case, the cord will be placed on the sides of the paper curtain. If you prefer a model with a cord in the center, then two holes are pierced in the middle of the curtain.

We pass the cord through the holes made

It is important that the cord moves freely inside the curtain, but does not dangle. For this, the holes made with an awl are enlarged with a large nail.

This is what an almost finished Roman blind looks like.

From the bottom, we fix the decorative cord with a retainer, and for fastening in the upper part we use adhesive tape.

Double-sided tape at the top fold of the paper curtain

We glue double-sided cattle and hang the curtain on the window

To "dissolve" the canvas - just loosen the retainer. In the case when the decorative cord is located in the middle, in the raised state, the curtain has the shape of a fan in the lower part.

The hard way

There is also a more complex "recipe" for making Roman blinds out of paper with your own hands. To do this, we cut the canvas into separate pieces 10 cm wide. We fold each separate fragment in half and glue it together. The result is something that looks like a flattened tube. On each fragment, mark the middle at the top and bottom. Then, using the marks in the central part of the fragments, we glue them together so that the result is an accordion with holes. Leave the glue to dry completely. And then we make holes on the sides, at a distance of 10-15 cm from the edge of the curtain. We pass the decorative cord through the holes and fix it in the lower part with a retainer, and in the upper part with adhesive tape. In order to make the design more durable, we attach a rail to the top of the curtain.

As a result, you should get such a "double" accordion

Complex curtains made of thick paper

Using various combinations of paper canvases, you can create very original curtains.

An important point: to create paper curtains, it is not at all necessary to choose plain wallpaper or boring colors. If such curtains are intended for a children's room or kitchen, bright multi-colored canvases look very organic. They can then be decorated with paper flowers or other decorative items. And the additional bright details available in the interior will harmoniously complement the picture. In general, do not be afraid of bright decisions, give free rein to your imagination.

For the manufacture of pleated curtains or Roman curtains, it is recommended to use wallpaper designed for painting. Firstly, in this way the desired color is created, and secondly, the wallpaper becomes more durable, but at the same time everything also transmits light well. And for a similar model of blinds, non-woven wallpaper is more suitable.

Curtains - panels

Panel curtains are also an interesting option. It will require a little more time, effort and money, but the result will certainly please you. First you need a frame. Usually it is made from wooden blocks with a cross section of 3x3 cm.

Planed wooden blocks for the frame

The bars should be sharpened and sanded

The length and width of the frame is selected depending on your window opening. Next, we take a roll of wallpaper and cut it into strips so that they are 4 cm longer than the width of the frame in length.

The strips are fixed at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the upper part of the frame on the sides so that 5-10 mm remain - they will serve as holders for our panels. The panels move along an ordinary two-pole cornice. Only in order for the structure to fit there, holes are drilled in the cornice equal to the diameter of the caps.

If desired, vertical blinds can also be made from narrow strips of paper.

Advantages and disadvantages of wallpaper curtains

The advantages of paper curtains are, first of all, in the availability of materials and in the ease of making the structure. In addition, such models of curtains are perfectly attached to both plastic and metal or wood. Due to their mobility, these curtains look good on windows of different sizes. If desired, you can always slightly change the length of the model.

Before choosing paper curtains, it is necessary to weigh the pros and cons of this window decoration option

Paper curtains are an ideal solution in case of repairs or a long absence of the owners, since they will reliably protect the windows, and if they are damaged, it is not a pity to throw out such a budget option.

Paper curtains are suitable for decorating windows in the country or on a loggia, because due to bright sunlight, fabric structures quickly fade and lose their attractiveness. Finally, in combination with curtains or drapery fabrics, paper curtains will make the room comfortable and stylish.

Despite their cheapness, paper curtains look very dignified in the interior of the room.

Speaking about the shortcomings, the fragility of the model should be emphasized. For a couple of months, these "curtains" lose their original chic. However, if you made them yourself, this will only be an excuse to update the interior beautifully and inexpensively.

Still, such models are best placed on medium-sized windows, since it is difficult to symmetrically raise or lower the canvas on a large window.

Shading in a room with paper curtains

Whatever window is in the room, you can always find the best option for decorating it with paper curtains

Finally, it is not possible to clean the curtains from the wallpaper. Any impact on them will necessarily lead to damage.

Making curtains from wallpaper remaining after repair is not difficult. This is a great opportunity to get rid of excess in the pantry and solve the problem of interior renovation. If you wish, you can spend a couple of interesting evenings doing this kind of handicraft with the whole family.
