Why electric spray gun?

It is believed that the best performance and the highest quality paint can only be achieved with pneumatic spray guns. This is true, especially when it comes to the professional segment. However, do not forget that the pneumatic spray gun itself will not work - such the device needs a compressor, and this in itself is not a cheap pleasure, and it should be taken care of corresponding.

With an electric spray gun, everything is much easier, because you buy a completely ready-to-use device of the "all-in-one" system. These devices require almost no maintenance, apart from cleaning, which is performed automatically in many models. The quality of painting, if we talk about air models equipped with their own built-in compressors, is also sometimes very difficult to distinguish from the result of pneumatic spray guns.

In general, for most household and even many professional tasks, an electric spray gun is much better suited than a pneumatic one. Let's see how to choose them correctly.

What to look for when choosing an electric spray gun

Principle of operation. Electric spray guns can be divided into air and airless (plunger) spray guns. The first ones blow paint from a pistol with a stream of compressed air - just like pneumatic analogues, only here a compressor of a strictly calculated capacity is immediately integrated into the system. Such devices are more expensive, they are more bulky, but the quality of their work is almost as high as that of pneumatic ones. Airless spray guns eject paint under pressure from a plunger pump. This design allows you to make the tools compact and relatively inexpensive, but in terms of the result of the work, plunger spray guns are somewhat inferior to air models.

Pistol type. Air spray guns can be equipped with different guns:

  • HP (High Pressure) is an inexpensive option suitable for domestic use. Differs in low quality coating and high material losses during transfer (up to 60%).
  • HVLP (high volume, low pressure) is a higher class option that can be found in professional and semi-professional equipment. Here, the quality of the coating is better, the loss of paint is lower (up to 35%), but the price is commensurately higher.
  • LVLP (low volume, low pressure) are the most advanced devices. Here, paint loss is reduced by up to 20% while maintaining a high quality coating. These guns are found only in the most advanced and expensive spray guns.

Type of food. The electric spray gun can be powered from the mains or from the battery. Network models are highly efficient and can work as long as there is voltage in the outlet. Their main problem is that electricity is not available everywhere, so if, say, you paint fence in the far corner of a large area, then you will need either a very long extension cord, or generator. Cordless spray guns are free from being tied to an outlet and are ready to work anywhere, there would be a charge in the battery. Usually they are heavier and more expensive than mains ones (it's all about batteries), not as productive, but much more mobile, and it's worth it.

Power. This parameter characterizes network spray guns. The power consumed by the tool allows you to judge its performance, speed of work, the ability to work with heavy materials for a long time and at the same time not overheat. For home use, a spray gun with a power of about 500 watts is enough. The power of professional models can reach 1000 watts or more.

Battery voltage. By this parameter, one can indirectly judge the performance of cordless spray guns. The higher the voltage of the batteries used by the device, the more efficiently it works. Cordless paint sprayers typically use 12 or 18 volt batteries.

Nozzle size. The diameter of the nozzle determines what materials the spray gun can work with. 1-3 mm is enough for most paints and varnishes, and primers and putty need a nozzle with a diameter of 6-7 mm. Usually, a spray gun comes with either an adjustable nozzle for materials of different viscosities or several nozzles for different tasks.

The location and size of the paint canister. This is not the most fundamental point when choosing a spray gun, however, the tank affects the mass and weight distribution of the device. In addition, it determines how often you have to interrupt work in order to refill the reservoir with new paint. The most convenient and versatile option is a transparent plastic 1 liter tank located under the body. This will allow you not to be distracted too often by refueling, but at the same time it will not make the device too heavy, and the transparent material will allow you to visually control the amount of paint remaining in the tank. However, for more serious tasks than ordinary household chores and minor repairs, you can pick up a device with tank for 6-7 liters or even a spray gun without its own tank, capable of pulling consumables directly from buckets.

Layout. Network spray guns can be found in two versions: hand-held and floor-mounted. Hand-held models are the most common and inexpensive, they are intended for domestic use. In the professional and semi-professional segments, floor options are often found in which the pistol is taken out separately, and on the base platform there are an electric motor, a compressor and a container with paint. Such devices are distinguished by high performance and the same price, so in most cases there is no special need to buy a floor spray gun for a home.
