- How to choose a dye coating for a wooden floor?
Wooden floors help to create a cosiness in the house. This is an environmentally friendly coating that can revitalize the interior and create a comfortable atmosphere. Painting them can be special paints based on organic solvents. It can be paint, enamel, wax and varnish.
Acrylic paint
These paints are based on acrylic resin, water and a coloring pigment. Such coating is characterized by non-toxicity, fire resistance, good moisture resistance and heat resistance. Acrylic paint guarantees long-term preservation of color, it is applied quite simply and quickly dries. It does not have a sharp odor, and if mistakes were made during painting, the dried coating can be easily removed.
It's very easy to look after wooden floors with acrylic coating. Such paint provides a long service life - provided that a quality sample is used, it can reach 10 years. Acrylic paint exhibits resistance to low temperatures and UV rays, has rather high protective properties and good vapor permeability.
Wood floors are porous and partially absorb paint, for this reason they will require a slightly larger amount of colorant than, say, a concrete base. In order to reduce the consumption of acrylic coating, paint the surface with a spray gun.
Read the note
When choosing acrylic paint for a wooden floor, remember that a cheap product is applied in at least three layers, and the road has a higher quality and consumes much less!
Alkyd paint
Alkyd dyes help create a glossy surface. This coating is very reliable, as its components penetrate deeply into the wood. After application, the layer dries quickly, and due to the presence of antifungal additives, a reliable protection against mold and rot is provided.
Painting floors with alkyd paint is recommended in rooms with high humidity, since such a coating has good water resistance. The color turns out to be quite intense and lasts a very long time.
But along with the positive characteristics, alkyd coatings have several drawbacks:
- is a sharp odor that has been weathering for quite some time;
- , when exposed to chemicals, the alkyd layer collapses;
- such a coating is not fire-resistant, and therefore there is a risk of its ignition.
Paint oil
Another kind of opaque coating. Somewhat earlier, oil paints were very popular. But with the advent of acrylic and enamel, they quickly lost their leading positions. The advantages of oil dyes include low cost and heat resistance. And, if you paint the floor with such substances, then it will acquire the ability to withstand the effect of both very low and sufficiently high temperatures. These coatings guarantee a permanent surface protection and are characterized by a long service life.
But oil paints have one significant disadvantage - this is a very low drying speed. And if you are going to paint the floor with just such a composition, then be prepared for the fact that due to the dense structure it will be absorbed into the wood rather slowly and it will take at least 24 hours to completely dry it.
Polyurethane enamel
Polyurethane enamels provide reliable protection of the wooden floor from wear. For this reason, they will be used correctly in rooms where the patency is particularly high. Such coatings perfectly withstand water and temperature changes.
However, polyurethane enamel also has a number of drawbacks:
- dries it very long and the drying time can vary between 6-36 hours;
- it should be applied only on absolutely dry floor, otherwise it will cracks and form bubbles when dried;
- enamel is characterized by high toxicity, and therefore it is not recommended to paint floors in residential premises.
The quality of enamel will always be evidenced by its cost. To remove this coating use white spirit.
Varnish coating
With varnish, you can get a beautiful glossy surface. Use it in those cases where wooden floors have a perfectly even structure and a beautiful pattern. Lacquer coatings can last for 1-3 years.
There are several types of varnishes:
- priming - they are used for reliable adhesion of the finishing varnish to the surface of the wooden floor and to prevent the raising of the villi of the wood;
- glossy - possess high antifungal abilities and reliably protect the tree from rotting mold;
- acid curing is the most resistant form, which is characterized by ease of application and high adhesion, in addition, before the use of such a coating, there is no need to apply a primer;
- anhydrous polyurethane - are resistant to chemical attack and are characterized by rather strong gluing qualities;
- water-soluble - in comparison with other species have low combustibility and emit a small amount of odor, but their wear resistance is low;
- alkyd and urethanalkid - advantageously emphasize the texture of wood and do not show adhesive properties, but in comparison with other varnish coatings have the lowest wear resistance.
Important!
Lacquer is not allowed to be used if earlier the wooden floor has been treated with oil substances, including linseed oil, as well as at high humidity and in open areas such as gazebos and verandas!
Oil
Oil impregnations can improve the properties of wood and create a reliable protective layer on its surface. This coating has a high penetrating power and extends the service life of wooden floors.
Board
For the care of wooden floors and parquet, it is advisable to choose more liquid oils - they are absorbed much better by penetrating into the deep layers of wood, and it's much easier to paint them!
The floor impregnated with an oil covering, for a long time will keep its original appearance, not shrinking or swelling. But when using such substances, the finishing finish with wax is always applied.
Wax
Wax is used in the final stage. It gives the surface a silky texture and can create both glossy gloss and dullness. Such substances have a high moisture resistance and reliably protect the wood from the development of fungi and mold.
But there is a drawback - the wax is not able to protect the wooden floor from mechanical impact. Therefore, such coatings are not used in high traffic areas.
How to choose the color coating for a wooden floor?
You can paint floors from natural wood with any of the above coatings, but when choosing it is worth paying attention to the following factors.
- If the paint has a long drying time, then it is desirable to apply it in rooms where there is a heating system and good ventilation.
- The humidity level plays a very important role, as many coatings have low moisture resistance.
- Specificity of the wood species and its appearance will allow to determine what to choose - varnish or paint, in addition, some rocks are more prone to mechanical influences, since they are very soft.
- If you are going to paint the floor in a dwelling, then in this case it is necessary to pay attention to the ecological safety of the chosen coating.
- If there is an old layer of paint or varnish on the floor and you do not want to remove it, then you can apply a new layer only after making sure that both materials have the same binders.
