Twice a year - in the autumn and spring, car owners change their tires. How correctly to organize storage of tires that they have served some seasons up to the maximum resolved deterioration of protectors? The purchase of a new set of "shoes" for the car is quite expensive, so it is important to know how to properly store the wheels taken for a long period. Summer and winter tires should be stored in different ways. But there are a number of rules that are mandatory for both types of rubber.

General rules for storage of tires

Car tires are made of rubber, although very durable. When organizing a place for long-term storage of wheels, first of all, one must take into account that it can cause negative consequences for them.

  • Tires do not tolerate prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. Constant exposure of sunlight to tires causes them to dry out. In them, microcracks not visible to the naked eye are formed. It's aging rubber and can lead to a rupture during driving. Therefore, storage of wheels under the open sky or light awnings is possible only for a short period of time - not more than a month. For the same reason, you should not store both winter and summer tires on an open balcony. In extreme cases, the tires should be covered with opaque material.
  • The temperature range that modern tires can withstand is quite wide. According to GOST, temperature fluctuations during storage of these products from + 35 ° C to -30 ° C are permissible. But it's better if the wheels are not subjected to the maximum permissible values. It is impossible to store tires in cold places near heating devices. In a metal garage, wheels can only be stored in winter.
  • It is necessary to avoid getting on the tires of various chemically active substances( acids, solvents, gasoline, alkalis, oils, etc.), as well as their vapors. It is not desirable for the tires to be in contact with corrosive metals and copper for a long time.
  • When placing car tires on long-term storage, one should not allow them to undergo any kind of deformation( point, kink, compression).Formed on the tires dents until the end of leveling pumping and even trips is impossible, such tires have to be replaced.

After removing the wheels from the car, it is desirable to mark them, indicating the location, for example - right front( PP) or left rear( LZ).This will help in future to install the wheels in the same places. And with an uneven wear of the tread, it is advisable to swap the car tires according to the principle - crosswise.

Storage of summer tires

Summer tires are designed for operation in the warm season. It tolerates high temperatures well, but becomes colder and brittle in the frost. In the northern regions, where temperatures fall below minus 40 degrees in winter, summer tires may crack and become unusable. So, how to properly store tires that are dismantled in the fall?

  • It is optimal to place summer rubber for winter in a warm room. If this is not possible, you can store it in the garage or at the dacha. You can use a dry cellar, where the temperature does not fall below 0 ° even in severe frosts.
  • Before cleaning the wheels for storage, they must be washed and dried.
  • It is best to store the summer tires on the discs in the form of a pump. What pressure should be in the tires - opinions diverge. Really, it is enough 1-1,5 Atm. The main thing is that during storage they are not subjected to deformation.
  • When storing wheels on discs, they are either stacked on a flat surface with a stack - one on top of the other( but not more than 4 pieces in each) or suspended by clothing through a central hole in the disc on a metal pipe( rod) or special hooks.
  • If the summer rubber is stored without discs, then it should be installed in a strictly vertical position, so that the tires are not clamped from the sides. Installed in this way, the tires should be rotated periodically( every three to four weeks) by 25 - 30 degrees. This will avoid deformation and keep the balancing.

You can not install summer tires on racks consisting of thin pins or corners, as this can cause irreversible deformation on it.

  • Tires during storage should be covered or covered so that dust or debris can not get inside.

Storage of winter tires

Winter rubber is stored in a similar way to summer tires. But it should be borne in mind that such tires are softer. Therefore, it is desirable to store them on disks. In no case should you leave the wheels for a long time in the sun, and not only because the winter tires do not tolerate ultraviolet. When heated above +50 degrees, they will become unusable. For the same reason, you can not store wheels used in winter in metal warehouses, garages or boxes. In the sun, these stores are heated to very high temperatures.

Brick, concrete garages, dry cellars and any other dry premises are ideal for storing tires.

If the winter tires are removed from the discs, then during storage( only in a vertical position), it must be regularly turned. Considering that it is much softer than the summer one, it is necessary to scroll it a little more often, approximately every two to three weeks. Do not store tires in a lying position or suspend them. This will inevitably lead to irreversible deformation.

When stored on discs in an inflated form, the wheels are laid on a flat surface with a pile or suspended just like the summer ones. It is desirable to lower the pressure somewhat, so that the tires do not inflate, but the air can not be let down to the end, since the lateral surfaces will be deformed during storage by the stack.

It is understood that before storing for storage, the wheels should be cleaned of dirt and washed.

What to look for when installing tires on the car after storage

Finding out how to store the wheels in the off-season, does not hurt to learn how to properly start the tire after long storage. Getting the wheels out of storage, you should carefully inspect for damage and wear. If there is an uneven wear of the wheels, they should be replaced by their places. In this case, it is also desirable to check and adjust the camber.

It is necessary to measure the depth of the tread, and if this value is close to the minimum, it is necessary to plan the acquisition of new tires.

It is very desirable to carry out wheel balancing every year. Unbalanced tires can be one of the reasons for uneven tread wear. In addition, the imbalance leads to premature wear of suspension parts.

Attention should be paid to the time elapsed since the date of manufacture of the tires. Even in the event that the tires are little used and outwardly look good, they have normal protectors, but after 6-7 years they should be replaced with new ones. Rubber eventually loses its physical and chemical properties, which seriously reduces safety during trips.

Determine the age of the tires by marking on the side of the wheels. The DOT number determines the production date. The first two digits are the number of weeks since the beginning of the year, the second two are the year of manufacture. So 1114 means that the tire is made on the 11th week( March) in 2014.

Following these simple rules, you can keep the "shoe" for your car for a number of seasons and provide comfortable and safe trips.
