Dolls are like people

Doll clothes can be sewn without a pattern. But if you want your Barbie or Alenka to look like a real princess, it is better to make patterns - you will need them more than once.

Basic measurements

First you need to take measurements. For pants, you need several of them:

  • length of the product;
  • waist circumference;
  • hip girth;
  • seat height;
  • length of the crotch seam;
  • leg width;
  • ankle girth;
  • knee girth.

Important! Waist circumference is measured at the navel, hips - along the most convex part, seat height - along the side seam from the waist to the seat of the chair. The distance from the bottom to the groin is a crotch seam.

But if you are seriously going to sheathe the doll, take off the rest of the measurements at the same time:

  • chest girth;
  • girth of the neck;
  • the length of the product from the neck to the waist;
  • shoulder length;
  • the length of the sleeve;
  • girth of the wrist.

What to measure?

In this case, a centimeter tape is not a very good helper. It is better to take other tools to take off all the parameters well, when planning to make pants for the doll:

  • regular ruler;
  • strong thread.

Tie a knot on the thread - it will be the zero mark. Further - nothing complicated:

  1. Attach the bundle to the doll's body.
  2. Wind the thread around your waist, making one turn.
  3. Use your finger to pinch the free end of the thread where it touched the knot.
  4. Measure the distance from the knot to the point clamped by your fingers - the knot must be attached to the zero mark of the ruler.
  5. Don't forget to write down what you get.

Important! A large doll, of course, is best measured with a regular centimeter.

What else do you need for sewing?

How to sew pants for a doll with your own hands - on a typewriter or by hand? It mainly depends on the size of the doll:

  • If you are going to sew a hefty baby doll the size of a real child, of course, you cannot do without a typewriter.
  • But for Barbie, all clothes can be sewn by hand.

But in any case, you need:

  • tailor's scissors;
  • short scissors (manicure can be used);
  • a set of needles for hand sewing;
  • threads to match the color of the fabric and of suitable quality;
  • thin elastic tape (a pharmacy elastic is suitable for small dolls);
  • small buttons, buttons and hooks.

Important! Make sure you always have a pencil and checkered sheets (notebook or graph paper) at hand. They are ideal for making patterns, even if you take drawings from grandma's magazines and calendars, where they are printed in a greatly reduced form.

Making a pattern

Before you sew the trousers for the doll with your own hands, you need to cut them out. The pattern can, of course, be taken in a magazine or on the Internet, if we are talking about a Barbie or a BJD doll, clothes for which sometimes cost no less than VIP-class outfits for an adult. The whole industry works for such “clients”, there are no problems with patterns. If necessary, new patterns can be made by ripping old things and tracing the contours of the parts.

If you have a less popular toy, you will have to work hard. However, it takes a little time:

  1. Decide how wide the legs will be.
  2. In the upper left corner of the sheet, put the letter T.
  3. From this corner, set aside the length of the product down, you can put the point H (bottom).
  4. Divide the waist by 4, add 1 cm to the result.
  5. Set aside the resulting measurement from point T to the right and put point T1.
  6. From the same point T downward, set the height of the seat, put, for example, point W (step).
  7. Draw a horizontal line from this point to the right.
  8. Divide the hip circumference by 4 and add 2 cm.
  9. Set aside the resulting measurement to the right of point Ш.
  10. Let it be point Ш1.
  11. Connect points T1 and Ш1 with a smooth line.
  12. Draw a horizontal line from point H.
  13. Set aside the width of the pant leg on it and mark the point H1.
  14. Connect points Ш1 and Н1.
  15. Connect the H and T points with a dotted line - when cutting, it will be applied to the fold of the fabric.
  16. Sign the pattern - name and number of parts (in this case 2).
  17. Sign the dimensions of the allowances with a plus sign and a number - there is a marking +2 along the waist, +1.5 along the bottom line, +0.7 along the step and middle lines.

If you are interested in how to sew trousers for a boy doll, then the process will be the same as making clothes for a girl. The only difference is the style. Straight or flared trousers are more suitable for a boy, for a girl they can be anything.

Important! The pattern can be modeled: for example, to make shorts, just move the bottom line.

What to sew from?

Cloth is rarely bought for dolls. Usually they get what is left of the master's things. This has its own plus. Since doll clothes do not experience serious mechanical stress, they can be cut as you like. The main thing is to adjust the drawing, if any.

To make two-piece pants for a doll, you need 2 pieces of cloth of the appropriate size:

  • the length is equal to the length of the product, plus the allowance for processing seams;
  • the width is equal to the half-girth of the hips, plus allowances.

Important! If you are going to sew heavily flared trousers, the width of the flap is not compared with the half girth of the hips, but with the width of the leg.

Features of fabrics

Do not sew doll clothes from materials that crumble heavily. For skirts and trousers sewn on a person, this moment is not so important, but on a tiny doll, crawling threads will be very noticeable and seem large. The chrysalis will look sloppy.

Therefore, choose fabrics with a strong weave or seams that can be easily patched. Hygiene and environmental friendliness do not play such a big role as in the manufacture of children's clothing, because your “client” does not have allergies, she does not sweat and does not freeze.

Therefore, the following materials are most suitable:

  • lavsan;
  • nylon;
  • advice;
  • microfiber;
  • gas;
  • veil;
  • raincoat fabric;
  • Bologna.

The least suitable:

  • denim;
  • wool;
  • silk;
  • cotton.

Important! It depends on how much the edges crumble, whether allowances are needed or not. For instance:

  • It is not necessary to hem the bottom of the nylon or avisent pants. These materials can be cut with a soldering iron or a burner, and the cuts can be simply processed with a buttonhole seam for beauty.
  • You don't need to do anything with bologna - just trim it carefully.
  • But cotton or linen trousers for a doll with your own hands will have to be hemmed or overcast, laying the stitches very tightly.

Let's start cutting

Doll trousers are cut in almost the same way as human ones. For this you will need:

  • a pair of tailor's pins;
  • a piece of soap or chalk;
  • scissors.

Important! Chalk or soap should give a very fine line and are best sharpened. You can draw with a pencil, but not on all fabrics it leaves a noticeable mark. But in Bologna and avisenta ballpoint pen draws best of all.

How to work:

  1. Fold a piece of fabric in half lengthwise, right side in.
  2. Create a pattern by aligning the dotted line with the fold.
  3. Pin it with tailor's pins.
  4. Circle the pattern strictly along the contour.
  5. Circle again, leaving allowances.
  6. Cut the workpiece along the outside line.

We sew trousers

So, everything is ready, it's time to start sewing. A number of questions immediately arise:

  1. How to sew - on the right side or on the wrong side?
  2. What should you do first - sweep the cuts or grind the details?
  3. What about the belt?

Important! Human clothing is usually sewn from the wrong side, then turned inside out. An exception is clothes for babies, where the seams are always outside, so as not to rub the delicate skin, and this rule can be followed when sewing a large baby doll. But for an adult young lady, albeit very tiny, you need to make clothes so that they differ from human only in size.

Operating procedure

Lightweight trousers can also be sewn on the right side with a decorative buttonhole seam. But clothes look much neater if they are made in the traditional way:

  • Overcast the details - by hand with a buttonhole or overlock, depending on the size of the doll.
  • Hem the bottom - if the doll is large, you can tuck the cut twice, just like you would when making regular clothes.

Important! For a small "client", you can fold the bottom once.

  • Fold the blanks together with the right sides, matching the same cuts.
  • Sew them with a basting stitch, leaving the top and bottom cuts open.
  • Turn out the pants and try on.
  • Fit them around the doll by making a few small stitches.
  • Unscrew the product
  • Sew the details with a back seam or overstitch.
  • Iron the allowances as much as possible.

Belt

The belt of human trousers is perhaps the most difficult part, but what about a doll? In fact, it's okay if you have an elastic band that fits the width.

Elastic belt

For Barbies and other dolls of a similar size, for example, a fabric-covered hair tie:

  1. Cut a piece of elastic at the waist.
  2. Sew it into a ring.
  3. Sew very carefully to the top of the pants.

If the doll is large, an elastic band will do, fortunately, it can be of different widths and different colors. It is sewn into a ring in the same way, and then it is sewn to the upper cut (so that the seam is on the inside).

Important! When sewing on the elastic, you need to pull it slightly.

Other belt design options

Making doll clothes provides much more opportunities for original technological solutions than sewing for people. For example, a belt can be decorated in several more ways:

  • with ties:
  • on the help, if your doll will wear a wide shirt over the pants;
  • finally, making pants for a doll with your own hands can be without a belt at all - it is enough to sew the top with a basting seam, small stitches, and pull it off slightly.

Important! The first two options are suitable for “clients” of all sizes, and as for the third, it is exclusively for the smallest “visitors” of your home atelier.

How to make pants for a doll without a pattern?

For pants made of lightweight material, a pattern is not needed at all. You will need:

  • 2 identical rectangular pieces of chiffon, gauze or thin nylon;
  • thin elastic band;
  • sewing accessories.

Important! The length of each piece of fabric is equal to the length of the product, the width is more than half the circumference of the hips. The wider the patches, the better.

How to make these pants for a doll:

  1. Overcast all cuts.
  2. Fold the patches right-side up.
  3. From the bottom cut on both long sides, mark the length of the crotch.
  4. Sew seams from the mark to the waist on both sides.
  5. Sew the crotch seams.
  6. Sew the top with a basting seam, small stitches.
  7. Place the gather around the waist.
  8. Sew the lower cuts of the legs with the same seam and pull together too.
  9. Hide the knots on the wrong side, under the buttonhole seam.

Important! Such pants are suitable for a large doll, but then it is better to make the belt and lower parts of the legs with an elastic band.

Tulle harem pants

Do you have a little tulle left after you sewed a skirt for your daughter? Excellent. Ideal material for doll clothes:

  • does not crumble;
  • you can cut it as you like;
  • does not stretch;
  • does not fade;
  • breaks poorly, but cuts well;
  • you can sew on the outside, if the threads are exactly the same.

Important! There is one drawback - the material is quite transparent, but this is not so important for small doll clothes. If you make your pants wide enough to have a lot of wrinkles, the flaw will disappear by itself. In addition, you can sew a long, wide sweater in an oriental style or make a belt in the form of a scarf.

Such wide trousers are sewn in the same way as the previous ones, that is, from two rectangular patches. But you don't need to overcast them - the tulle edge looks pretty neat. We select the threads strictly according to color and quality, then the seam will be completely invisible.

Let's get down to the creative process:

  1. As in the previous case, first we mark the length of the crotch seam and sew from it to the waist on both sides - and in this case, it is better not the traditional seam "back to the needle", but something more interesting, from loop to "Goat".
  2. We sew both step seams in the same way.
  3. We lay basting seams along the bottom of the legs and the waist line.
  4. Pulling the top and bottom together and stacking the assemblies.

Basic rules for a dressmaker

For many novice needlewomen, sewing doll clothes seems to be a very difficult task - all the flaws are noticeable. But the process will go much easier if you follow some simple rules:

  1. Come up with styles that have few seams.
  2. There is absolutely no need for extra details on doll things.
  3. Do not be afraid if the pattern seems dubious to you - all the details can be adjusted.
