A real aluminum revolution awaits housing construction in Russia - builders have appreciated the advantages of aluminum wires and cables and have declared that they are ready to widely use them in their projects.
The understanding of the useful properties of aluminum alloys of the 8th series brought the industry representatives closer to this decision. Wiring made from them is technologically advanced and safe, and also easily withstands voltage and temperature surges. In addition, it fully meets today's building standards. Experts emphasize that cable products made from 8-series alloys have gone far ahead of what was used in housing construction during the Soviet Union.
“In the USSR, the main disadvantage of aluminum was the problem of brittleness, creep, and a decrease in the mechanical strength of the conductive core during periodic overheating in the wiring of residential buildings. But today this problem no longer exists thanks to the development of new aluminum alloys,” said Vladimir Savchenko, General Director of the Bogoslovsky Cable Plant.
Vladimir Volkov, founder of the construction company Oggion, agrees with him: “It must be admitted that copper wiring has a modern alternative - the 8th series of aluminum alloys. And do not talk about its fragility, poor conductivity. All private sector wiring in the US is aluminum and works great. In our conditions, it works just as well.”
Guarding the price per square
According to experts, the cost of aluminum cable is 40% lower than that of copper cable. It is also lighter than the copper "colleague" by 20-50% with the same bandwidth. However, today the share of copper in wiring in the construction industry is still about 80%, while in the energy sector it does not exceed 20%. Such data is given in the Aluminum Association. At the same time, it should be noted that the production of alloys of the 8th series was mastered at the Kandalaksha and Irkutsk aluminum plants of Rusal back in 2014.
If developers “turn” towards aluminum wiring, this can ensure the completion of the objects they are already building on time and without increasing cost. According to the Aluminum Association, "winged metal" will reduce the cost of current projects by half.
“The first thing they think about is the economic effect. I'll give you an example. Here, compare the aluminum power cable AsVVGng (A) -LS with a cross section of 3 × 4 mm and the copper VVGng (A) -LS with with a smaller section of 3 × 2.5 mm - a copper cable with a smaller section costs on average twice as much as an aluminum cable big. Accordingly, the higher the cross-section of the conductors of the cable, the more noticeable the difference in price between aluminum alloys and copper,” said Anton Sokolovsky, power engineer at Glavstroy regions".
According to him, in the residential complexes "Capital" and "Geroev", built in Balashikha and Zheleznodorozhny near Moscow, the electrical wiring is almost entirely made of aluminum alloys.
“Other developers are also already using aluminum cables for risers and common areas,” summed up Anton Sokolovsky.
Today, Moskabelmet and other manufacturers offer a wide range of cable products with aluminum alloy cores. And, for example, the AsVVG cable from an alloy of the 8th series is specially designed for laying in residential buildings and is 50% lighter than its copper counterparts. The difference in prices for AsVVG cables made of copper and aluminum reaches 60% in favor of the latter.
