Wooden shingles are called differently in different places. It all depends on the local dialect. In addition to the name "shingle", you will find others: shingles, shindles, wood chips or ploughshare.
Shingles can be found in places where wood is mined. It is inexpensive and is often just used for kindling.
Our ancestors knew that even a thin shingle from good moisture resistant wood is an excellent material for roofing. And a special overlapping method of laying gives a full guarantee of protection against leaks. Now, when additional synthetic materials have appeared, such as waterproofing films, roofing with shingles is a reliable and durable method.
But earlier, when there were no such films, a wedge-shaped cutout and the same protrusion were made on each shingle element - this made it possible to create sealed joints
How to make shingles yourself
To get shingles, you need to split the board along the grain. This split does not damage the structure of the wood and leaves it impervious to moisture. Processing wood with saws softens the fibers, they become open and actively absorb water.
In order for the wooden elements to have the same thickness and size, a special device is used to facilitate splitting. This is a special ax with a longer (compared to the usual) blade and a mallet. The blade is applied to the place of the split and a blow is made on the butt with a mallet.
The traditional form of shingles is rectangular plates. But the old masters rarely stopped at this. If it was necessary to make it beautifully, each detail was decorated figuratively. You can see an example of such architecture in the architectural monument of Kizhi. The shingles of aspen and larch are made there so that from afar it sparkles in the sun like silver.
And due to the fact that the dies are small, they can cover a roof that is very complex in geometry - even a bulbous, even a hipped roof.
What kind of wood is suitable for shingles on the roof
As already mentioned, aspen and larch are ideal options, which have proven their durability over three hundred years of operation. But, in addition to these species, conifers are also suitable for shingles - spruce and pine. Due to its high resin content, such shingles do not rot and germinate for a long time.
How shingles are laid
Shingle flooring is laid from bottom to top - from the overhang to the ridge of the roof. For shingles, you will need a dense crate with a step of no more than 10 cm. Each plate is fastened with at least 2 nails and positioned so that the attachment point is covered with the next element. Such a roof must be decorated with end boards.

Is it worth covering the roof with shingles? This, of course, is a purely individual matter. Working with such material is quite time consuming and troublesome, it takes a lot of time.
