What's going on in the building materials market? Every day there are new prices, and if you saved money for building a house, with the current prices it is good if you can even get the walls out. Against this background, you have to save on everything. But in fairness, it should be noted that saving sometimes forces us to return to the old proven methods and materials, which are no worse than modern technological innovations. For example, to abandon synthetic insulation in favor of cheap and natural clay.

Why clay is a good choice
If you need to save on something, then you can definitely use insulation, because it is really possible to replace it with a natural and affordable material - clay.
What are the benefits of using clay:
- if not completely free, then at least cheap. Clay can be mined independently on your own site. Most likely, when you were digging a trench for the foundation, you have already stumbled upon clay soils, just select a place and start mining;
- clay is an excellent sound insulator. It is always quiet in houses insulated with clay, no external noises will disturb your peace;
- pests do not start in clay, beetles and mice do not like to settle in clay insulation, especially if you add a little broken glass to the mixture. But many other modern materials are a real breeding ground for them.
It is very simple to make an insulation mixture from clay, you can cope with this task even alone and without special skills in construction, but, of course, assistants will speed up this process.
Clay insulation makes your home fireproof. No, of course, this method of insulation will not completely prevent a fire, but it will give you the maximum possible time to extinguish it.
Are there any downsides to clay?
There is, of course, because there is still no building material in nature without flaws.
What can be found in cons:
- the need to attract assistants for kneading and applying;
- a long time to dry (for this reason, clay is insulated only in summer);
- the need to apply a thick layer of insulation (about 30 cm).
And the decisive argument will be precisely the comparison of prices for modern heaters. Yes, it is much easier to work with them, but they also have enough drawbacks - and even more significant than those that clay has.
Some nuances of using clay as insulation
To insulate the walls with clay, preparatory work needs to be done. First of all, the surface of the walls must be carefully insulated from the insulation. For this purpose, a waterproofing film is used, which is overlapped so that moisture from the mixed clay solution does not penetrate inside while the insulation dries.
It is important to observe the proportions when preparing the clay mixture: for 1 part of the clay, 3 parts of sawdust are used.
The sawdust species is not important, but the best results in insulation are shown by sawdust of coniferous species: pine and spruce.
