The HousChief editorial staff continues the series of publications with the hashtag #BestHedom and now the topic of air purification in an apartment and house is especially relevant. The self-isolation mode made us stay in a confined space for a long time, and many literally dream of a breath of fresh air that happens in a forest or a green park. Why is this air so different from the one in your apartment? An interesting fact: the smell of meadows or forests contains up to 15 thousand negatively charged air ions, and the air in the apartment is only 25! Russian researcher and inventor, Professor Alexander Chizhevsky noted in his works that such an ion-poor air literally destroys our body, and suggested an interesting device: an electro-effluvial chandelier, which is able to bring the air quality in a closed room closer to the norm. Thanks to the scientist, such devices appeared on sale in Soviet times, and today they are replaced by more modern ionizers that perform the same function. The devices are quite expensive, but you can make it yourself, using the experience of the author of the YouTube channel Dmitry Kompanets.

Air ionization: placebo or real effect

What is the difference between ionized air and non-ionized air? In order not to go into scientific terms, here is a simple example that you probably came across. Remember how the air is different after a thunderstorm? It is at this moment that he is maximally "charged". And you will surely agree that after the rain it is especially easy to breathe and the state of health improves significantly.

The research of Professor Chizhevsky in the 60s was so impressive that the presidium of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions even issued a decree on the ionization of the air in industrial premises. The task was to take care of the health of working employees. Chizhevsky's chandeliers, which are a frame with a metal mesh, to which a high voltage current was supplied, were hung in the shops of factories. This idea was taken up by modern ionizer manufacturers.

But in fairness, it must be said that debates about the benefits of ionization are still ongoing in scientific circles. Opponents of this theory believe that ionization does not affect a person's well-being and that its entire effect is a placebo. However, there is ample evidence of the effectiveness of this air purification method.

But why not try to test the effect on yourself, if the device can be literally made from scrap materials?

What you need to assemble a simple household air ionizer

To assemble a small appliance for a room, you need a plastic container and a computer cooler. Size matters only in terms of the power of the device. The cooler's task is to drive air through the electrodes, and dust particles, which will also be charged in the process, must remain in the container, which will give an additional effect of air purification

The container can be round or square or rectangular, it doesn't matter, the main thing is that the cooler fits in it
An important part that you need to operate the ionizer is the high voltage converter. You can buy it or a picture tube from a TV. Such a converter can be assembled independently, from a transistor, a resistor and a transformer. You can easily find instructions and diagrams on the Internet.

That, in fact, are all the components, you can start assembling the device for air ionization.

The electrodes, i.e. foil, should be secured inside the container. One of them, like a magnet, will attract dust from the air passing through the cooler.

The foil must be glued to the bottom and sides of the container, but so that these two parts do not touchPHOTO: YouTube.com

Important! The device must be periodically cleaned of accumulated dust.

What does an air ionizer do for your health and what contraindications are worth considering

According to user reviews, ionizers significantly alleviate the condition of allergy sufferers and those who often and seriously suffer from colds. Ionized air promotes rapid healing of wounds, normalization of lung function, even with such serious diseases as tuberculosis. In such an atmosphere, people suffer less from heart attacks and strokes, their immune system is strengthened and efficiency increases. Many have even noted a rejuvenating effect.

But this device also has contraindications. First of all, ionizers are not recommended for people with bronchial asthma and those who have heart rhythm problems, a tendency to vasospasm.
