The runners are probably bent and rusty, the planks are cracked, the paint is peeled off. And some sleds are completely lost. Of course, they can and should be restored, they will serve more than one generation.
There are many upgrade options. You can sand off the rust and old paint on the boards, then cover with a new modern permanent paint.
Or you can remove the pieces of wood altogether and put a piece of thick foam or something similar on the frame. The baby will be warmer to sit.
Alternatively, for the smallest, you can attach a cradle basket.
A little more creativity and not very difficult work - and you get a pretty fantasy. The body can be cut out of thick plywood (approx. 20 mm). But the decorative nose of the runners is to be made from a strip of metal 3 mm thick and riveted or welded to the existing ones. If this is difficult, then she can be left with a purely decorative function. For painting, use acrylic paints and varnish.
Modernization options
Modernization of the appearance and design of the sled will require from the master the ability to handle carpentry and locksmith tools, and sometimes the ability to perform welding.
An inventive mother, having bought a rather complicated folding sled (Fig. 7), remade them to fit my requirements for convenient transportation of an infant in winter conditions.
Mom bought an additional carrying bag and glued Velcro on the bottom. The same Velcro was installed on the sled area. The bag is easy to install and remove.
After some modernization of the basic structure of the sled, the carrier bag was attached with Velcro to the frame. Mom got a comfortable vehicle for winter travel.
Here's another modernization of the old sleigh. Almost all the work was reduced to cleaning the metal structure from rust and remaking the wooden platform. Then the backrest was installed with handrails.
Craftsmen not only remodel the old sleigh. They also create a sled from the material at hand.
