Each crack has its own reason, and before you tackle the trowel and mortar, you need to figure out why this happened and make sure that the crack does not grow. It is easy to check the dynamics of the defect: stick a strip of paper across the crack and observe it. If the paper is torn, plaster alone will not cope with it. Two-component epoxy resin mixes

This crack bridging compound is clearly more effective than cement based. But there is one nuance: it is suitable only for horizontal surfaces, that is, they cannot "cure" cracks in the wall, but in a concrete floor screed it is easy.

The mixture dries quickly and acts as a reinforcing compound. To close a crack, you first need to "open up" it. This is done with a grinder to flatten the edges. Then the vacuum cleaner removes all dust and debris, and the seam is covered with a primer. Staples are placed in the transverse grooves and the seam is filled with epoxy resin mixed with fine sand as a filler.

If a crack has formed in a structure that is constantly in contact with moisture, sand is not added

Sealing cracks with a cord

Crack sealing cords and tapes are commercially available. The cost of the product is not so cheap, but this method is quite reliable and can be used on both horizontal and vertical surfaces.

The advantages of cords are that they are durable and seal imperfections in the wall well. They can be safely used in winter in the most severe weather and for work outside. The tape is sized according to the size, and in addition to it there is a polyurethane concrete sealant with a gun.

Crack preparation is performed in the same way as described above. It is important to have a clear understanding of the size and depth of the defect in order to select a self-expanding cord.

Please note: the cords are not caulked, they fill the free space during the expansion process. The outer part of the crack must be filled with polyurethane

What happens next? As long as the cord is dry in the crack, nothing happens to it. But as soon as water appears in the crack, the material reacts and it expands, filling all the free space and sealing it. The volume can increase up to 8 times.

For hard-to-reach places where it is impossible to lay the cord, use a paste with similar properties

Self-healing cracks: is it possible?

And this is not from the realm of fantasy, but the real development of our scientists. The principle of operation of the drug is based on hydrophobic crystals, which begin to work upon contact with moisture. When added to the concrete mix, they protect the surface from small external cracks.
