The bio prefix indicates that such a fireplace runs on environmentally friendly and safe fuel (usually industrial alcohol produced from agricultural crops). The fuel can be liquid or gel-like. When such fuel is burned, no smoke or soot is formed, but carbon dioxide and water are released. At the same time, the concentration of released substances is so low that they do not pose a threat to human health and well-being. Fuel consumption is quite economical, depending on the size of the fireplace, however, it does not exceed half a liter per hour.

The heart of the bio fireplace is a burner that can be combined with a fuel tank

The biofireplace design usually includes the following elements:

  • a tank or compartment for fuel (in its manufacture, stainless steel with a thickness of at least 2 mm is used);
  • burner (it can be capillary, wick or gravity);
  • body made of refractory materials (metal, special glass, ceramics, stone).

The principle of operation of such devices is quite simple: biofuel is poured into a special tank, then the burner is ignited with a lighter. Ceramic wool is used to meter the biofuel feed into the burner. A special damper or cap is used to extinguish the flame.

The intensity of the flame depends on the size of the fuel tank and the design of the device, and can also be adjusted by the user.

Depending on the cost, the complete set can be replenished with a remote control. It can be used to control the intensity of the flame, as well as the process of ignition and stopping the combustion. Also, decorative logs made of ceramics or stones are added to biofireplaces to create a more spectacular appearance. The bio-fireplace can be supplemented with a sound device that simulates the crackling of wood when burning to create maximum naturalness.

Varieties of biofireplaces

The modern market presents a wide selection of bio fireplaces that will satisfy the tastes and needs of even the most fastidious buyers. Such products differ not only in appearance, but also in the method of installation, dimensions, materials used, decorative elements. Below are the main types of biofireplaces.

These fireplaces are medium in size (as a rule, no more than one meter in length and 20-30 centimeters in width). The most common among them are rectangular fireplaces, however, there are other options: a semicircle, a triangle, as well as designer versions of an indefinite shape.

Advantages and disadvantages of biofireplaces

The biofireplace in the living room will look great with any choice of interior design: high-tech, classic, loft, etc. The main thing is to choose the right style for the design of the product itself. Such devices have many advantages:

  • safety of use (as mentioned above, only natural and safe fuel is used for the operation of biofireplaces, which does not emit toxic substances during combustion);
  • no need for constant control of the flame (fuel from the tank is supplied to the burner in a metered manner, therefore the flame intensity cannot be higher than the set level);
  • simplicity of installation and operation (such devices do not require a chimney or exhaust hood, it is enough just to put the biofireplace in the right place and set the burner on fire);
  • the biofireplace does not require additional power and electricity sources;
  • wide selection and originality of models;
  • aesthetics of the device and flame.

However, along with the advantages, these devices also have disadvantages that should not be forgotten.

Despite the presence of a flame, biofireplaces are not suitable for heating a room, since the heat generated during combustion is insufficient. The bio fireplace can only supplement the existing heating system. And then, only on condition of the impressive size of the device.

The relatively high cost of both the devices themselves and consumables, including fuel (with constant intensive use of the fireplace, the volume of fuel consumed will be impressive).

The need for a vent in the room where the device operates. This is due to the fact that when fuel is burned, oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is released. With constant burning, this can adversely affect the well-being of the residents of the room.

Even with the seeming safety of using a biofireplace, do not forget about basic precautions: the operating device should be located on a distance of at least one meter from flammable materials (curtains, carpet, upholstered furniture, etc.), and place an open flame away from drafts.

If there is unused fuel in the fuel tank, it is better to drain it, otherwise you will smell alcohol in the room.

Whatever the user's choice, the biofireplace will become a real highlight of any living room interior, bringing into it a unique feeling of comfort and warmth, helping to relax after a long day at work.
