sofa construction In order to know how to repair the sofas yourself, one desire is not enough. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the device of upholstered furniture, materials, which are used and the stages of work.

To begin with, you need to carefully study the elements of the sofa and their purpose. Although your furniture may in some way differ from the described, however, the purpose of the basic details is identical.

So, what does the sofa consist of?

  • Armrest. This element can be made of MDF, chipboard, metal, wood. Can be studded with soft material.
  • Leather or upholstery fabric. To date, there is a large number of various upholstery fabrics, both natural and synthetic.
  • A layer of batting or sintepon.
  • Foam. In the most high-quality models of sofas, furniture is used, with a density of 35 mm.
  • Paddings made of polyurethane foam. This part is not used in all models. These gaskets are used to give the furniture additional cushioning and better weight distribution. The surface of the sofa, thanks to such inserts, has orthopedic properties.
  • Spring block. It is the main cushioning element of the whole structure. Felt or burlap. Used to prevent the appearance of unpleasant sounds of friction of plywood on metal.
  • Fibreboard. It is used as a base for a sofa mattress.
  • Frame of the sofa. Can be made of metal, wood and chipboard.

Important! Fixing a sofa is easiest if its frame is made of wood. Frameworks from the chipboard are not easily repairable. In this case, you can repair the sofa only if the whole frame. If it is broken, it is better to buy new furniture.

  • Flaseline.
  • Roller rack. This part can be in the bottom of the box for the bed and be both metal and wooden.
  • Niche or box for bed linen.

Important! The design of the sofa can be different, each model has its own design features, but all the presented elements should be available. Some parts of the sofa have a great influence on the basic characteristics of furniture.

Let's consider these elements in more detail.

Frame

This part is the main supporting structure. The material of manufacture can be different, even a variant of a combination of several is possible. It is on the quality of the material and the assembly of the frame that the length of the entire sofa depends. Shield elements and frame filling parts are made of fiberboard or chipboard.

Filling the sofa

It can be attributed all the materials that are between the upholstery fabric and the frame. Convenience, environmental safety and durability of the sofa depends on the quality, type and layout of these materials.

The transformation mechanism

The type and design of upholstered furniture is determined by the design of this mechanism. The comfort of using sofas depends to a large extent on the quality of the manufacture of the mechanism of transformation.

Accessories and types of materials

To repair the sofas was successful, you should at least in general terms know the mechanisms of transformation and types of materials in more detail, since during the adjustment you will need not only to assemble and assemble the sofa, but also to purchase the necessary elements. Since the choice in the stores is very large and varied, and sellers can not always objectively help, the buyer is the most reasonable to rely only on their knowledge.

Transforming mechanism

Consider the most popular options today:

  • Book. It is considered the most reliable mechanism, therefore it is very popular. The sofa is unfolded by raising the seat until it clicks, and after - lowering it.
  • European book. This design is transformed as follows: the seat rolls out, and in its place the backrest is lowered.
  • Eurobook "tick-to-do".The difference from the previous variant is that the seat does not roll out, but leaves in a semicircle.
  • Accordion. The mechanism consists of three parts and is laid out on the principle of accordion. It is necessary to raise the seat slightly until it clicks, the mechanism will move forward, laying out the sofa.

Important! Repair of the sofas of the "accordion" mechanism in the case of curved elements practically does not make sense. Elements can be aligned, but since the transformation takes place with effort, the mechanism will again bend in the same places.

  • Click-clack. Such a mechanism allows the sofa to have three positions: a sofa, a semi-decomposed "relax" position and a bed.

Important! Such soft furniture has a metal frame.

  • Dolphin. Such a mechanism, as a rule, is used in corner sofas. At the bottom of the construction there is a strap, pulling it, the second part of the berth leaves and takes seat height.

Important! In the event of a failure of the transformation mechanism, its replacement should be carried out only on a similar type. Other mechanisms of furniture simply do not fit, because they are different, both according to the principle of action, and in size. The frames of such sofas are also different.

Filler

The materials used in the filling of the sofa also play an important role in the comfort of the furniture:

  • The best option for many years already is a spring unit with bag-padding and a coating of batting and burlap. But this option is considered one of the most expensive.
  • To reduce the cost of a finished product, coarse calico and foam rubber are often used.
  • The cheapest options for furniture as a filler are only a few layers of polyurethane foam, corrugated or other similar material. There is no spring block in such couches at all.

As the repair of the sofa you do for yourself, it is worth choosing quality materials. These include the following.

Polyurethane foam( PPU):

  • A durable material that is considered environmentally friendly.
  • For qualitative repair of the sofa you will need a special furniture foam. As a rule, its thickness is not less than 40 mm.
  • The material provides maximum seat comfort.

Holfoiber:

  • A filler that perfectly maintains its shape over a long period of use.
  • The material is safe and environmentally friendly.
  • Also its advantage is the possibility of a wet cleaning of the sofa and "breathing" properties.

Synthepone:

  • Elastic and elastic material, absolutely safe and environmentally friendly.
  • Does not absorb water and has a high resistance to fungus formation.
  • Gives the furniture a special softness and relief.

Quilted jacket:

  • Represents two coats of coarse cloth with a layer of cotton wool( approximately 5 cm).
  • To cover the spring unit is considered an excellent option.

Periodic:

  • Keeps shape well and is resistant to deformation.
  • Is a durable, heat-resistant and hypoallergenic material.

Upholstery

Upholstery fabric or leather is one of the important materials for the repair of the sofa. With the skin to work is problematic enough, therefore it is better to entrust the repair of leather furniture to a professional. But you can replace the fabric upholstery yourself.

Important! Upholstery fabric is of two types: woven and non-woven. The latter species, as a rule, is made on a synthetic basis and has an artificial coating.

The most common upholstery fabrics are as follows.

Flock:

  • Composition of the material: approximately 65% synthetics and 35% cotton.
  • Comfortable and soft to the touch textiles.
  • It has strength, does not burn out and serves long enough.

Velor:

  • Pile fabric, which, unlike flock, does not glue, but is woven.
  • More durable textiles with a more natural composition.
  • The base consists of two types of fabric - cotton and wool.
  • The cost of velor is slightly higher than the cost of flock.

Jacquard:

  • Represents an artificial silk.
  • Fabrics are characterized by strength and resistance to burning.
  • Textiles are two-layered, so in the upholstery of the sofa can be used either side.

Chenille:

  • Velvet fabric, with durability.
  • Wear-resistant, therefore will last long enough.
  • Can be made in two versions: fabric( more natural and expensive) and glued.
  • Quality material is characterized by the formation of pile on the surface.

Tapestry:

  • Natural textiles, considered elite among upholstery.
  • Comfortable in everyday use and care. Easy to clean with detergents.
  • Is the most expensive material.

How to repair a sofa at home?

Elements of the construction of sofas you already know, the necessary materials have been chosen and purchased. Now you can proceed directly to the repair work.

Required tool

To begin with, prepare the inventory so that everything is at hand. You may need the following items:

  • Cross and flat screwdrivers.
  • A set of locks on 12/14 and 8/10.
  • Pliers.
  • Stapler and staples 10 and 16 mm.
  • Joiner's glue.

Important! If the joiner's glue you could not find, in extreme cases, you can use PVA.However, it is worth considering that the effect will be somewhat different.

  • Hammer, utility knife and scissors.
  • Self-tapping screws are 35-45 mm long.
  • Drill or screwdriver.

Dismantling the sofa

Renovation of the sofas starts with a partial or complete disassembly of the structure.

Important! It is advisable to work together, but if there is no such possibility, then use wooden blocks as a support.

Prepare a camera or pen with a piece of paper. Thus, you can mark the locations of the exact position of the elements so that the assembly of the structure takes place quickly and correctly.

Procedure:

  1. Start disassembly with armrests. If they are combined with the legs, then place a wooden beam under the base of the structure so that at one end the sofa "hangs".
  2. The sides are secured with two bolts. To get to them, you should raise the sofa seat or push out a part of the structure. It depends on the mechanism of transformation.
  3. After this, it is required to remove the transformation mechanism. Use a screwdriver( screwdriver) or screwdriver to do this. One part of the mechanism is attached to the frame, and the other to the backrest and seat.

Important! Take pictures or write down what mechanism where you were.

  1. Then it is necessary to disassemble the rest of the sofa so that only the frame remains. All the elements of the backrest and seat are bolted or freely "seated" in the grooves.

Replacing the upholstery

To replace the upholstery, you must completely remove the old upholstery. This is easy to do with pliers and a conventional flat-blade screwdriver.

Procedure:

  1. Pull out all metal parts( staples, nails or screws).

Important! Make sure that not one metal element is missed, otherwise - later it will cause damage to the new upholstery.

  1. If you have a sewing machine capable of sewing rough fabric, and there are sewing skills, then you can try sewing a new cover yourself. Otherwise - you can refer to the masters sewing studio.

Important! After removing the upholstery fabric, carefully inspect the mattress. If his condition is doubtful, then disassemble it.

  1. You can also try to wrap the sofa manually. If the design of furniture is simple, then this can be done without any problems.
  2. With the sewn case, you only have to pull it and secure it with brackets( 10 mm) along the entire perimeter.
  3. When stretching manually, it is necessary to measure the exact width and length of the sofa elements to be sewed.

Important! Cut tissue is recommended with a small margin.

  1. The fixing of the material always begins on the front side. The edge of the fabric folded in half - this will help prevent the breakthrough of the matter in the attachment points.
  2. Use the staples to secure the entire front side.
  3. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the product.

Important! Make sure that the fabric around the perimeter is as tight as possible. The folds or the deviation of the upholstery from the filler are unacceptable.

  1. Go to the attachment on the sides and center.
  2. Place the fabric in the corners, superfluous wrap or cut.
  3. In this way, replace the upholstery on all the sofa elements.

Important! Make sure that all the braces fit tightly into the tree. If necessary, finish them with a hammer.

  1. After changing the upholstery, you can start assembling the design of upholstered furniture. Collect in the reverse order of disassembly.

Replacement of foam

This repair of sofas is carried out almost the same as changing the upholstery. The only difference is that the old upholstery remains unchanged. Usually these two jobs are held simultaneously, but if the upholstery is still in good condition, then why spend money on materials?

Procedure:

  1. Disassemble the structure of the sofa as described above. You need to get to the foam rubber.
  2. Remove the old filler.

Important! To replace the filler, use foam rubber with a density of 35-40 mm.

  1. If the foam was broken by springs, then replacement of the spring unit cover is required. In this case, cut a tarp or batting to size and cover the block in two layers.
  2. Cut out the necessary piece of foam rubber, place it on top.
  3. Secure the foam rubber to the frame.

Important! You can attach the filler to the burlap, using glue.

  1. Put on sintepon. It is not necessary to fix it.

Important! This material is not mandatory, but greatly facilitates the stretching of the upholstery.

  1. Pull the fabric, secure with clamps and assemble the sofa.

Repair of the transformation mechanism and the frame

To repair the mechanism of the sofa, remove it and assess the degree of damage:

  1. With the whole valve, it may only be necessary to lubricate the engine oil of the units and develop them.
  2. If the spring is damaged, it must be replaced. In case of excessive stretching, you can try to shorten this element.
  3. If the mechanism is broken or deformed, you should purchase the same and install it in the furniture.

Repair of the frame is somewhat more complicated. Broken or cracked items require urgent replacement. To do this:

  1. Measure the exact dimensions of the required part, sketch them yourself or with a specialist in the departments of construction hypermarkets cut out the part.
  2. Replace, glue and twist the remaining connection points.

Important! Pay special attention to the plywood placed under the spring block. If it moves, it should be fixed with screws and glued PVA.So you get rid of the nasty squeak that occurs when you sit on the couch.

  1. Assemble the sofa.

Repair of the spring unit

There are springs of two types:

  • "old" - diameter 15 cm, height - 20 cm, thickness - 5 mm;
  • "modern" - diameter 10 cm, height - 12 cm, thickness - 2.2 mm.

Procedure

Disassembly and assembly for the repair of the sofa is done in a similar way.

Modern springs are connected with each other by a spiral. In case of damage to several elements:

  1. Dissolve the fixation of the spiral from one end, and with the other end - unscrew as a screw.
  2. Loosen the spring on both sides.
  3. Replace and tighten the spiral.

Important! If there are a lot of damaged items in the block, it is easier to buy a new unit, because the probability that the remaining elements will also start to break is high.

Knowing how to repair a sofa, you can breathe new life into old furniture. If you want and a great imagination, you can transform the product beyond recognition, while spending quite a bit of money. If you do not have any skills in working with furniture, you can independently purchase all necessary materials, and you can entrust the work to a specialist. So you will save, and you will not doubt the quality of repairs.
