Before proceeding to the gluing process, you should prepare the necessary tools and carefully prepare the very basis of the door. Let's start all in order.

Required Tools

For work you will need:

  • Ruler.
  • Metal corner.
  • Measuring tape measure.
  • Marker or pen.
  • Construction knife or sharp scissors.
  • Diffuser with water( to adjust the position of the film).
  • Rubber spatula( for leveling the glued coating).
  • Hairdryer. The household appliance is necessary for the processing of corners and protrusions.
  • Sandpaper, plane, primer and putty to prepare the door surface( if necessary).
  • Wet and dry cloths.
  • Tool for removing the door from the hinges.

Preparing the door for pasting

In order to work comfortably, it is better to remove the door from the hinges and dismantle the hardware on it: handles, locks, latches, etc.

Important! If the door has a glass, then first remove the beads and dismantle the glass surface. In order not to suffer after the pasting of old staples, you will immediately acquire new ones.

So, the door is removed and ready for processing. For the film to lie perfectly, follow these steps:

  1. Sand the plane of the door leaf with sandpaper if the surface of the door is flat. If the door leaf needs to be leveled, then you have to work hard.
  2. If the paint is peeling off on the surface of the sheet, then remove it with a spatula.
  3. Small cracks, potholes on the surface of the canvas, fill with putty and let it dry.
  4. The bulges are removed by the planer.
  5. Sand the surface to achieve maximum smoothness.
  6. Wipe the door leaf from the dust with a dry rag.
  7. Wash the cleaned surface with a soap solution to degrease the surface. You can use detergent for washing dishes for this purpose. Add it to warm water and rinse with a cloth.
  8. Allow the door to dry.
  9. Treat the door leaf with acrylic primer.

Important! Before working with the film, check how tightly the door closes. And if necessary, remove a little from the ends to provide a small gap for the thickness of the film. This preliminary work is necessary in order to avoid any wear of the material in the future when closing the door, because even a self-adhesive and thin, but it has its own thickness.

Instruction for gluing the door with a film:

  1. Mark the required material. Using a tape measure, determine the dimensions of the door, apply the appropriate measurements on the film for pasting doors with a marker or handle. Along the edges do not forget to leave a margin of 2-3 cm. In the case where the width of the film allows, make a marking taking into account the ends of the door. For ease of marking, manufacturers applied millimeter paper to the back of the film.
  2. Uncover the film on the strictly delineated lines with a clerical knife. The edges of the material must be flat. If the door is deaf, the cutting process will go faster. If the door has a recess under the glass, then cut it in stages, in parts.
  3. Begin the pasting from the top of the fabric. Separate the protective film gradually, no more than 10 cm.
  4. Attach the film to the top of the door leaf, glue it.
  5. Smooth the glued area with a rubber spatula or a soft rag, just like you do in the case of wallpaper - from the middle to the edges.
  6. Slowly, for 10 cm separate the protective layer, move from top to bottom, in parallel, drive the bubbles with a rubber spatula or cloth.
  7. Wrap the film on the end of the door. You can glue the ends before processing the main cloth - for this, wrap a small strip of material from the end to the canvas.

Important! If you decide to glue the material on the butt together with the entire fabric, then do not forget to take into account its dimensions when cutting.

  1. Use a sharp knife to trim excess material. Do this carefully, very carefully.
  2. Cut openings for the lock, handles, other removed accessories.
  3. Insert the glasses, attach them with glazing beads( if you removed them).
  4. Give the door time to adapt and dry.
  5. Insert all hardware.
  6. Decoration loops.
  7. Hang the door on the hinges.

Useful advices for

It should be noted that it is extremely difficult to re-film the film, so use the following guidelines and small tricks in the process of work:

  1. Immediately before applying a self-adhesive film to the door, apply a soap solution to the surface of the blade with a spray gun. This will allow you to move the sticker if necessary. At the final stage, use a rubber spatula to remove the remaining solution from the film.
  2. If during the gluing bubbles formed, gently prick them with a needle, blow off air accumulations, smoothing with a soft cloth. Another option is to get rid of the bubbles - heat the problem area with a hair dryer, and then carefully clean it again.
  3. To self-adhesive well pressed against the base, protrusions, angles dry the dryer. The film on the door will melt slightly, so it will lie flat on the surface.
  4. Self-adhesive is ideally placed on the lacquered sheet, however, if in the future you are going to remove the film from the door, do not cover it with polyester or primer varnish.
  5. If you later want to remove the sticker, then use a hairdryer. Well warm the film - the glue will disconnect from the base. Use for this purpose can be as a normal hair dryer, and industrial or fan-heater. After the film becomes soft and begins to lag, poke the corner, pull the cover over.
  6. A proven way to remove the film is to wet the surface with hot water. Thoroughly treat the surface with water, and after a couple of minutes, separate the coating with a knife or spatula. Remove glue residues from the surface using alcohol or a solvent.

Important! Self-adhesive film has many advantages, but most importantly - it is universal, can be used to decorate any surface:
